This was a test--he was certain of it, and Alan wasn't about to be intimidated into submission. That's what Blackbeard wanted, right? A man that was strong enough to look him in the eye without pissing his pants, but could also fall in line. Admittedly, Alan was having difficulty with that last bit, but if he wanted to continue being in Blackbeard's good graces--and kick that smarmy little shit Izzy Hands out--he needed to play ball.

So, he kept eye contact, and tried to swallow as subtly as possible. He wasn't a coward. But he also very much wanted to survive. This was a really hard line to follow.

"You can trust me, you know." He assured.

"Tell me something," Blackbeard says, nearly croons, the tip of his knife very close to Alan's eyeball. "Do you like having eyelids? 'Cause I can take care of those for you. You know, if you were thinkin' of giving 'em up. Seems like you might be."

He craned his head away from the tip of the blade, even as his head was held in place by another crew member. His gaze flit between the knife and Blackbeard, his head going a mile a minute in an effort to find a way to save his skin. Well, his eyelids, at the very least.

"You're making a mistake here." Alan finally replied, his voice strained from the bend in his throat. "You and I both know what an asset I am to you, and what I can get you. What I can do. I need eyes to see that, don't I? And you don't seem the type to waste opportunity..."
