Leave a “Break Me” in my ask, and I will write an angsty drabble about our
April listened to the soft tapping of her converse on the Clorox scented linoleum. Today would be the last day, according to the doctors. Today would be the last day she’d see her best friend alive...well, kind of. She wouldn’t be waking up from coma, according to them. Cody and the kids would be there tonight, when it was time to officially pull the plug.
The group of them plus Nick, for three months straight, fought like hell. The more the doctors shoved the papers toward them the more they refused. However, it got to a matter of what was best for her. To keep her connected to a machine that gave her the only oxygen she could manage or to cut her life? The hardest was when Amy and CJ asked about mommy. “When is she going to wake up Auntie Ape?” They would ask with wide eyes, tears flowing down their cheeks.
She never knew how to answer them, only how to hug them and let them cry.
In her arms, she hugged a unicorn to her chest like a child facing its’ worst nightmare. The door was at the very end of the hallway and she heard the steady rhythm of the heart monitor. Brown eyes landed on her best friend. Her imagination didn’t see the bed ridden woman, she saw the strong woman. The Celeste that, for years, had been getting into trouble with her. The Celeste that built pillow forts with her and didn’t judge regardless of the fact that they were well into their adult years.
“Hey..” April muttered, a lopsided smile on her face while she sat next to the bed. The sun came in just right, hitting her pale face while her eyes remained closed. Apparently, in the state they would be forever.
One arm clutched the unicorn while her hand came up to grab Celeste’s.
“...you know. When I showed up to that tryout I didn’t think I’d be walking out of it with a best friend.” She whispered, her eyes on the chipped purple nailpolish that had been done by Amy. “You...are one of a kind. We’ve really done it all together haven’t we?” She said, tears beginning to stream down her face. “Cel, tonight you’re going to float on up to heaven and turn into a guardian angel. I’m sure God has a special set of wings for you..ones that look like they belong on a unicorn. Just for you. You’ll be the most special angel of all..” Her tears turned into sobs and AJ’s forehead fell onto the mattress. “...and I’m going to protect Amy and CJ like they’re my own.”
Finally, after composing herself just a little bit, she looked at her best friend’s face. “I love you,Cel...and this isn’t goodbye. Regardless of what the doctor’s say...this is just a see you later. I’m going to see you again one day, and we’ll be busting faces...because...””
Just as April was about to finish the sentence, she felt a pressure on her hand. She thought she’d imagined it, but the second squeeze and the heart monitor told her elsewise.
“Cel?!” She squeaked out, her heart racing while she waited for some sort of sign.
“It’s what we do..” A very familiar low whisper said through an oxygen mask.
