Rita supposed if she had to run into Edgar Bones again, it was just as well that it was here where she looked--dare she say it--even more stunning than usual. The deep purple went well with tanned skin, and sunkissed highlights in her blond up-do. It had been months since they had last seen each other. Since before his friend--Caradoc wasn’t it?--had gone missing.
The piece she had written on it had been more restrained than usual, though she refused to admit that it might possibly be in deference to Edgar’s feelings. She could have gone off on wild flights of fancy, throwing out suggestions even more ridiculous than the last. And her readers would have eaten it up. She hadn’t, but of course she didn’t expect that he noticed. if he read her column at all it was likely with derision.
Unfortunately, the young wizard’s was only the first in a series of disappearances. With no rhyme or reason, individuals were disappearing. And even Rita, who preferred to remain neutral, had to admit that the majority of disappearances were of Muggleborns, Halfbloods, and their Pureblood sympathizers.
But that was certainly not a thought for tonight. Not when the champagne was flowing, and the war had taken a night off. There were so many attractive people in the room, Rita’s eyes were finding it difficult to focus on just one. As Bella had suggested, she was considering her prospects for the night. No point in her going home alone, after all.
When her eyes met Edgar’s, she felt a flash of something through her body. She raised her glass in a mock toast towards him, a sardonic smirk on her lips. She held his gaze in a challenge, wondering if he would take it up, or turn away like so many before him. Augustus for example. One look from her was enough to send him running to hide behind Bella’s skirts.
