The call started with Alice reporting to him about the recovery status of one of his injured associates. But when Iwo caught a small yawn between her words, he quickly interrupted her.
“Report aside… You’re done with work, correct?” He didn’t even wait for Alice to respond. Knowing her work ethic, he figured she took care of all her tasks by this hour of the day. “You should at least take a nap.”
Hearing Alice mention difficulty sleeping as of late, Iwo let out a sigh. He searched through his little bookshelf to take out the devotional he has been reading for the past week or so. “…Find somewhere comfortable and close your eyes. Let me read you to sleep.”
Work was always demanding regardless of the type of shift she'd been scheduled for. Her contract kept her on either 8 or 12 hour without her having to be on call because she was already on call for something else. Alice had stepped out of the hospital and was wondering where she should stop for food on her way home when the call came, quickly sending her to the other side of town.
Every now and then, her coworkers would praise her non-traditional skills when it came to emergency trauma, asking what kind of training she had when they mostly shared the same hours and similar credentials overall. She would simply smile and mention having field experience abroad. It wasn't an outright lie, she did take several specializes courses in England, but the brunt of her actual hands-on skills came from underground dealings, which very much counted as another world altogether in her book.
By the time she arrived on the scene, the patient was in a serious condition and it took her quite a while to stabilize him enough in order to get him moved to a secure location with the proper facilities. Even after that, she didn't feel comfortable leaving. Now that he was settled in and his vitals were being monitored, Alice took a moment to report to his superior, handing her phone to one of the guys who'd called her in to get in contact with whoever that was.
She wasn't expecting to recognize the voice on the other side of the call, but recovered quickly enough to explain the situation without sounding surprised. Now that the patient wasn't in danger, though, the tiredness caught up with her and a yawn snuck up inbetween her words. The doctor started apologizing, but the priest interrupted her.
Hearing Iwo so much as mentioning a nap brought a flush to her cheeks, the memory of that one time when she went to report to him personally after a double shift and fell asleep in his office coming back full force. She'd apologized profusely, of course, rambling about how soothing his voice was.
His sweet offer to help her fall asleep brought a small smile to her lips and she let the guys know she'd be resting for a bit, but to call her in case anything happened. Closing the door to the small break room in the clinic, she sat down on the sofa and scooted down a bit to give her head a better position, putting the call on speaker and sighing as she closed her eyes.
"Thank you, Watanabe-san..."
