She’d held a hand to her heart, as if attempting to slow its frightened gallop behind her ribs. The man had a terrible time picking up the damn phone, but had no problem finding his way into her blasted apartment and making himself at home on her sofa. He deserved to be shoved onto the floor.

Rather than resort to violence, she grumbled beneath her breath, covering the man with an afghan. He’d answer for it later; for now, he likely needed sleep.

He turns up on her doorstep with a grin and a hug. In one hand, a home-made birthday cake; in the other a top-shelf whisky. He presses a kiss t her cheek and says softly, "I didn't forget. Happy birthday." And now he can only hope to be let in because carrying a cake in one hand and a bottle in the other and trying to hug your best friend at the same time is more of a juggling act than Victor bargained for.

It’s was Molly’s Birthday!

“I didn’t think you did…” She fibbed, her mood lifting considerably once Molly sees him at her door. Readily accepting his hug, she perhaps held him a little too tightly and a little too long, and by the time she realized, the cake very nearly slipped from his fingers. Carefully taking it from him, she moved out of the way to allow him inside. “Please, please come in…”

“This is amazing, Victor…I mean, really…” It may not have seemed like much, but to Molly, this was the world. Setting the cake aside and then the bottle, she went in for another round of hugging, pressing playful and gleeful kisses to his face and his jaw. “Thank you, thank you, thank you…!”

“How many of these have you had?!” Molly picked up the third can of energy drink, tossing it into the trash with its sisters. What the hell had he been doing to himself while she was gone? “Alright, that’s it–up, up, up.” She took hold of his chair, jerking it away from the desk and turning it toward the bedroom. At least the silly thing came with wheels–if all else failed, she could just steer him into the bedroom and lock him inside.
