Athos was born in a small village to a rather poor family. He grew up along with three brothers. Since he was the oldest of them. After his father died due to an illness, Athos had to make sure he was going to raise money to feed the family. And so he did, until his brothers were old enough to to go working too. When he turned twenty-five, Athos decided to leave his home where he was protected and safe to go and explore the world outside his village. The day he said goodbye to his family, he promised he would return but that day was supposed to never come. Shortly after he had left his home, he found himself no one else than in the castle of king Leopold and queen Eva. Athos had been always quite skilled when it came to the sword and fighting. And he proved himself worthy of becoming a proper member of the king’s royal guard. There he met Porthos, a rather rough tartar. They had some problems getting along in the beginning but soon, they started enjoying each other’s company and became really close friends. Athos and Porthos had been there when the queen died, and Regina became the new queen of the kingdom. Things changed rapidly and the all so light and loved kingdom turned into a dark place. Especially after the king had died too, leaving the young Snow back with her stepmother.
People realized very quickly that nothing was staying the same and everything was about to change. That’s when Aramis joined the group, the former priest of the kingdom. Athos swore to stay loyal to the royal family until, give his service and protect them at all costs. It was until Regina wanted him to kill Snow, breaking her request so coldly to him, in return he would’ve been treated with the best things. But he declined. Just like the others did. The group of guards was banned from the castle, leaving them all back to live in a small house that belonged to Aramis. The man kept themselves in the back, watching bad things happen around them. But when Regina decided to murder an entire village because they were helping out Snow it was enough to form some sort of alliance. And the musketeers were born. Athos discovered that the village Regina murdered was the one he grew up in, the one where his family lived. When he returned only ti find their dead bodies, Athos swore to get revenge on Regina, what she did to him and what she took from him.
They tried their best to protect the innocent people of their land from the cruelty the Evil Queen brought to them. And it was only shortly after when a young woman, who named herself Milady joined their group. For Athos it was love at first sight. This woman had not only been the most beautiful one he had ever met before, she was also as skilled as their group was. She was quick, and clever and she was a woman. That was her main advantage. He was impressed by her from the very first second on, and Milady fell in love with the brave man too. With the promise of always protecting her, and one day being able to give her the life she deserved, the two fought together, sight by sight against the Evil Queen.
Only a short time later, a young boy names D’Artagnan joined their alliance against the Evil Queen. The young boy reminded Athos a lot at himself, he was as young and stupid he used to be when he was his age. And he quickly grew a liking to the boy. D’Artagnan had hope, and was ready to fight for the right thing. And he admired that. Together, they found out about the truth of Snow White and what happened to her and they lived up to their once made promise, to protect the royal family at all costs. Snow and Charming were impressed by their courage and soon they became the royal formation of the new rising kingdom. Over the time, Athos had felt a little lost. He had lost his home, his place in the kingdom, and hope. He had love, that seemed to be enough but back in a position he loved to be, Athos knew he had found his place again. The group found out that Regina was going to cast a curse, people talking about how it would bring them to a different land without magic and fear spread through the kingdom and those who believed in Snow and Charming. It was shortly before the curse was cast when Athos proposed to Milady. Times were crazy, none of them knew what was going to come or if they would survive. And he wanted to be with the woman he loved forever. Not being able to actually get married, the curse was cast, his fate in Storybrooke written.
Storybrooke brought a new life to everyone. Athos was no longer himself, he was now John Winchester. A man who loved to get drunk as soon as he had breakfast, hanging around the Rabbit Hole all his time. Starting fights, swearing at people, just letting everyone know how much he hated his life. He never questioned the reason for his pain he felt on the inside. But no one did in that town. It was just there. And he wanted everyone to feel it. With Emma coming into town, his behaviour seemed to change. He suddenly seemed not to be hanging out at the Rabbit Hole, drowning his misery in alcohol. Instead, he suddenly started visiting the tea shop near the supermarket, the place where his a woman called Charlotte was working. She was no one else than his Milady. The two could feel the connection between them right away. But it seemed like something was keeping them apart. When Emma broke the curse, Athos finally remembered who he was. The pain faded and he was reunited with not only his love but his friends. Regina couldn’t stand the new won luck while she seemed to be doomed to be alone forever. No, she made sure right before their wedding to reveal Milady’s true identity and how she was living a doulbe all the time over. Athos fell into a deep hole, betrayed by his true love he cut off all strings to her, knowing he could never trust her again. Milady had tried her best to assure him that she was never going to risk his life, that she really loved him but he didn’t believe a single word she said. Regina had not only taken his family from him but also his true love. Adn that was something he would never be able to forgive her.
While the time was healing slowly all the betrayal Regina had caused, Athos was never able to completely forgive her what she did. Milady neither.
When years later suddenly the ship with people from the land of Untold Stories arrived, Athos met a man, looiking similar to him. He was King Adam, a version of the beast from a different story. He was on his search for his love Belle, another version of her living in his land. After some time, it came out that Athos had been adopted back then. He was actually from the land of Untold Stories, a family that was owning an entire kingdom in France. Athos was the big brother to Adam, remembering that he had been about three years when Adam got born and only a year later he was taken by Rumplestilskin to the Enchanted Forest. Athos had been the price his father paid to get powerful and mighty. All he wanted to become was king and since he had another son born, his decision had been clear. Adam should’ve been the one to be given to the Dark One in return to never ending power and youth. But instead, Athos, the little boy offered his service, letting his brother stay with his family while he paid the price. Since it wasn’t Adam, their father wasn’t completely fullfilling the deal and so he only became power as a part of the deal. The Dark One wanted the child to be his own, to have a son that he had lost. But Rumple quickly realized that Athos had been more work than he wanted to have and ended up giving him to a poor family that lived in a village far away.
Finding out that Athos still had a family, a place to go and a brother who would always be thankful for what he did, though Adam hadn’t had a wonderful childhood as well, he decided to go back with them, join him and Belle to go back to France with them. And that’s when Athos left Storybrooke.
