part i: bellworth crossing, ohio.
it starts just the same as any other: a small town, forgettable to those who grew up there, the kind of place where nothing ever happens, typical, expected. as far as anyone is concerned, bellworth crossing is no different from every other boring, mid-western town that came before it. established in 1838 by thomas bellworth, the town was named after him and the train station he built to ‘put the town on the map’. nearly 150 years later, the town has grown into something of a suburban haven—all sub-divisions and a new shopping mall, proving itself to be the ideal place to settle down and raise a family. as long as you ignore the looming presence of the cold war base on the southern end of town, you’re in the clear; turn the other way, just as every patron has done before. any unexplainable power outage, or new ‘missing person’ poster is nothing to worry about ( pay no mind to the fact that it happens at four times the national rate ), nor are the strict orders from everyone around you to look at anything but the heavily guarded gate at the front of fort hemlock. there’s no need to worry. the dedicated doctors and scientists hidden away in the base are merely studying the weather patterns, doing radar tests and tracking wind patterns. they’re only working to better serve their community, and the town at large. nothing more.
