Just my quick thoughts on Boyd at the moment here: he's the perfect protagonist as it relates to the Mexican American War and ideas of masculinity. He did not fit a narrative his superiors wanted etc. Just from the intro to 'A Wicked War' "this is also a story about...what it meant to prove one's manhood in the nineteenth century." Thus with Ravenous and ideas of masculinity tied to war, western expansion, killing & meat...how Boyd attempts to reject Ives's offer- to how this war had the highest number of deserters idk i think it all ties in.
