“I’m not a huge fan of the Sadnesses having been people”
Oh! canonically they arent, Odiles explanation is iust confusing
“They attack everything they see[3], and can reappear once defeated[4]. Sadnesses have existed throughout history, with some being harmless, but wars or times of great trouble make them more frequent.[5] A person does not need to die in order to create a Sadness.[6].”
From the wikis page for Sadnesses, all those numbers i don’t feel like editing out have links to sources
of course that doesn’t necessarily mean someone dying wouldn’t create a Sadness, the emotions around such an event would be extreme after all
Oh yes I know!! I just know its also a common fan interpretation! I just dont enjoy it as much because the idea that extreme negative emotion can form a monster is SO INTERESTING, and the other one feels like it’s bringing it back to like, a weird zombie sort of thing.
(Also I feel like the party would treat them with a lot more respect if they were technically bodies of people.)
My interpretation has been that Sadnesses are formed by negative emotion interacting with latent craft in the air! Basically that it snowballs into creating a form and will. Ish.
The whole Sadness will thing I have headcanoned to be basically that they gain the will of the negative emotion that created it, like how Mal Du Pays goal was to isolate Siffrin, because that’s how it was created. Feeling isolated and like the others were better off without him.
Also with most of the House Sadnesses being very classically hostile, hitting and attacking, that makes a lot of sense to me! Because that’s what people wanted to do to the King, and considering that there’s so many frozen people in there, its no question really as to where that negative emotion came from.
Also makes sense as to why not all of them are hostile! If you’re feeling hella bad, your instinct isn’t necessarily to harm someone about it.
I like Sadness theory. I think its neat.
Thank you for letting me yap about this!!
