Hey physics Tumblr. I have a question. If there are 2 people on the moon. Both have the same mass. One is on the earth-facing side. The other on the far side of the moon. If they both stood on scales. Wich one would be heavyer?

My guess is that the one on the far side would be heavyer. Due to the pull of the gravitational fields of both moon and earth in the same direction. But I might be wrong. Are there centrifugal forces applying? And are they stronger then the earth's gravitational pull from that distance?

Happy Black History Month

Today we’re celebrating two people: Katherine Johnson and Guion Bluford. Both contributed their skills to help further N.A.S.A. Katherine worked with N.A.S.A. as a “human computer” back when the origination was just starting out. With her accurate knowledge of mathematics, Katherine was tasked to calculate the first, space round trip for a human astronaut in 1961. After the success, she also helped check the accuracy of a round trip to the moon, in 1962. Even after computers had begun to branch into N.A.S.A., Katherine still stayed to give her expertise til her retirement in the 80′s. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

Guion had a PhD in aerospace engineering and was a skilled Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm to prove it. With his skills and knowledge, Guion seized the opportunity to join N.A.S.A.’s space flight team and thus became the first African-American to travel space in 1983. Guion completed several space missions while aboard the Challenge before the shuttle met it’s demise, in 1986. Fortunately for Guion, he wasn’t present for that mission. Guion completed two more missions on the Discovery shuttle to wrap up his space travels in 1993. Guion’s efforts have been honored in the International Space Hall of Fame.
