I think one of the best things about Ruby's radscoprion casserole in Primm is it means someone looked at a radscorpion bigger than hell and went, "huh, I wonder if any part of that is edible." And it was.
Something I found equal parts intriguing and deranged about Fallout 3 is the Enclave Radio Station. People comment on it seeming pre-recorded despite it mentioning the Capitol Wasteland by name. It plays old music and plenty of its inspirational quotes are connected back to Abraham Lincoln. It is a bastion of sickening nostalgia frozen in time. It professes a longing for Pre-War greatness, craving the result without acknowledging the before and after of the project and how it led to current issues.
Pinnacle of bastardry and it's a neat little microcosm of the game.
As we get up to years like 2281 (FNV) and 2287 (FO4) it would make more sense for wastelanders to measure time with the War as its starting point (X number of years PW). However, keeping Anno Domini as a measuring tool would lend itself to some pretty excellent "who the fuck is Jesus?" exchanges.
PW probably enters common talk because it's a significant event that everyone knows the date of and it shifted the world. You say 303 years post-war and people generally know what you mean.
On the topic of radio plays, I think there is an explosion of media after the end of the war that mythologizes courier six. On a related note, I think it is entirely possible to encounter an NCR citizen who has no idea that the courier is a real person.
What Fallout is missing is a thriving radio culture. Bring back radio plays!
There should be a mod that changes "The Tops" to "The Bottoms". For equality reasons.
I'm still fucked up about that last post. I suppose exiting a Vault must be like climbing out of a coffin and discovering there is life outside of the graveyard. I wonder if the world at night seems terrifyingly quiet to Vault Dwellers.
