           she’s not sure what happened. she had gotten up from tim’s couch to help him bring over their take-out and drinks, but he had snuck something from the bag in the meantime and now had crumbs on his mouth. jenna can’t help the small laugh she lets out before she instinctively reaches out to brush them away with her thumb. but instead of moving her hand away when they’re gone, it stays put and now she can’t really look away. she finds herself leaning closer to him and she’s sure this is it - she won’t back out, she’s going to kiss him. but she panics at the last minute, her cheeks suddenly heating up as she takes a step back. 

          “ketchup!” she says with a little too much enthusiasm as she picks up the small packets, desperately trying to make some sort of conversation. “they gave us extra ketchup!  do you want some ketchup?  i love ketchup.”

          “damn, i should do that - it’s been years since i did.”  val says as she grabs a french fry from the plate in front of her. she used to all the time when she lived in the city but life had gotten... hectic over the years.  “actually,”  she pauses, grabbing another fry.  “did you hear about that one dude last year? i think it was somewhere in california... he set up this whole thing, made it look like he was a professional. turns out he was keeping all the blood people gave him in his fridge. him and his buddies thought they were vampires or somethin’. real fucking weird.”

               “dude we HAVE to go in.”  she says in a stubborn tone (her father used to tell her she got that from her mother). there’s a hand on her hip and another gesturing towards the old brick building that stood in front of the two. the windows had been bared, the door boarded up  -  although most buildings were like that now  -  and there was a banner on the ground out front that read the hours of what used to be a soup kitchen.  “we need food and there’s gotta be something in there.”
