Mourn Me: a drabble about one character mourning another character’s death_________________________________________________
The world was spinning, he could feel the motion of it beneath his feet, everything sounded muffled and distant, everything felt like needles in his skin, the sun seemed far too bright and the grass far too green…nothing at all was right, and it never would be; Humanity had lost their strongest soldier.
How could someone so strong, so full of raw power and unmatched talent, feel so frail and slight? The limp form he carried in his arms towards the wagons that were waiting to bear the weight of their dead back to the false safety of the Walls was so small, so shattered…nothing at all how the Captain carried himself, with strength and dignity.
The world is spinning, hoofbeats pounding against the hard packed dirt of Karanes as the Scouts come pouring through the gateway, slowing to a defeated crawl as they enter the city and take in the faces of the people lining the streets to watch their return. Auruo can’t make out the individual faces even though this is his home and he knows many of these citizens…his brothers and parents might even be in the crowd, but he is unable to raise his head to even attempt to find them. His head feels heavy, pulling his shoulders into a slump as Idjit plods along with the crowd of soldiers, and his throat is so tight he can barely breathe.
The room is spinning…but he prefers it this way. The burning of the alcohol as it pours down his throat and settles warm in his belly drives away the ache in his soul and the feeling of hopelessness and defeat is eased. This is his nightly routine now, drinking himself into oblivion and collapsing on whatever surface he happens to be near when it finally drags him into a dead sleep…dead but not restful; the lines around his mouth and the bags under his eyes are more pronounced than ever. People are worried, he knows, but he can’t quite bring himself to care through the haze and the pain of knowing that Humanity is going to lose this fight.
If the fight could take Captain Levi…someone as weak and pathetic as himself didn’t stand a chance.
