character analysis

((NOTE: I could talk to you all day about how I tend to write and tear down Farkle’s personality but right now I’m gonna talk about some nuances in his character that people have been raging about for the past, oh, day. I may also bring Riley into this a bit because I also roleplay her and they’re actually very, very similar in several regards))

Farkle Minkus isn’t a socially apt character. Neither, however, is he socially inapt. This is an important contradiction to his character-- Not because of the contradiction istelf but how easily it can be misinterpreted.

I say he’s socially inapt for a reason: He doesn’t have a filter. In recent episodes he’s quieted and calmed down a lot, but he’s still blunt and straight to the point with his words. He doesn’t mince them. Even things like jokes are said very measured. He knows exactly what he wants to say and how to say it. Just maybe not when to say it or why to say it.

Because of this he can be taken as inconsiderate but that’s furthest from the truth. Farkle, as a person, is a very strong mixture of both Riley and Maya. He has Riley’s belief in his friends. He has her ability to see things only purely on occasion (looking at you Girl Meets Fish antics). But, like Maya, he also has the ability see things for what they are and gives them a realistic perspective. Sometimes more than Maya herself does.

Farkle has, honestly, never once put himself before his friends. Even in the first episode he pointedly says he could never choose between Maya and Riley and, further still, when told to choose between them or his schoolwork he had a panic attack. This trait persisted through the season. Yes, he had some creepier antics in the first season, but Farkle was hyper-aware of his position within the girl’s relationship. He was a friend, close, but also kept at arm’s length. He loved them and showed it and sometimes they treated him as a cute puppy to pat on the head.

This is important because in spite of this behavior: Farkle never once leaves their side. He never once does ANYTHING purposefully to hurt them. Yes, he does accidentally but there was never any malice and he always regretted it instantaneously (I’m mostly looking at Friendship here, where he did hurt Riley and further in Crazy Hat-- however the latter was also competition and trying to prove a point). It’s so bad that in Farkle’s Choice he can’t choose between them and ultimately decides that he can’t see them hurt each other so he chooses to go alone. In spite of the fact he was going to face a crushing defeat alone.

The fact people are saying “Farkle isn’t paying attention to Maya’s feelings” is outrageous to me.

Here’s the thing: Riley outed Maya’s feelings but ultimately hid her own.

Farkle is the person who has been with the girl’s the longest. It has absolutely been shown as canon that he can read their mind and knows exactly what is wrong with them: often before the other girl (see Texas, Rileytown, etc). This doesn’t outweigh what the other girl means but this is where he actually IS socially apt. Because he watches them and tries to understand exactly what’s going on.

This is important: Because, as Farkle says, he likes his friends just the way they are. He doesn’t want them to change and be hurt. He wants to be able to help to the best of his abilities but ALL OF THIS is beyond his abilities. He doesn’t know how to handle feelings. He knows when someone needs to be tied to, to be confronted, or even to be held: but he doesn’t know what to do with the feelings that come with it.

He understands it’s likely Maya likes Lucas. That wasn’t something he’s unaware of. It’s not that he wants to hurt her:

It’s that in trying to protect her Riley is shutting down all of her feelings.

There is a reason Riley says she’s “really tired” lately in the past few episodes (Rahrah, Rileytown, Texas). She’s been bullied, she’s faced heartbreak, and she’s realized she’s been unintentionally hurting her friend for months. And as soon as she realizes that she shuts down. She decides she can’t feel those things so Maya can be happy. She tries to put up a front, she tries to smile, but it doesn’t work. She’s breaking inside and we see that in part three.

Farkle realizes this.

He sees it in how she responds to Charlie. He sees it in knowing that there’s no way she feels the same for Lucas as she does Auggie. He sees it when she breaks down crying in front of him. He is the only one except her mother who sees the fact that Riley is tearing herself apart by hiding what she really feels and watching something she wants to be happy for but, yet, can’t fully be.

He knows Maya hasn’t seen this yet. Just as it took him breaking it down for her to know Riley was being bullied.

He knows that Maya would never want Riley to hurt like this.

And not because of her.

But he also knows that Riley is being a hypocrite: She’s lying to herself. And that’s not something he’s okay with. None of it is. Because seeing his friends fight over him was too much for him, but seeing the girls he loves crying in front of him? That’s entirely worse.

Him saying anything isn’t about hurting Maya and she’d understand that because the entire time Riley has been hurting.

The fact his biggest quote is “I did the right thing” proves that he understands what he did might be wrong and unfair. That it wasn’t his place. But it also shows that he understands that if Riley was never pushed she wouldn’t have done it: Because Riley has run from everything that hurts her. Unless she’s pushed she’s happy staying in her safe, happy bubble. And this time Maya isn’t here to give her that push: Farkle is.

So I fully believe Farkle does what he does for the best interest of all of his friends. Because he calculates these things. He understands it might hurt Maya. He understands Maya wouldn’t want Riley to pretend like this. But most of all he doesn’t want to see his friends broken: And that’s exactly what’s happening.

Farkle has the best of intentions every time. Just maybe not the best of executions. But, really, I think he just didn’t want them to go into the New Year holding something like that in which is why he was determined to do it by Midnight.

what else is there to do? [open]

Classes being over left a whole castle full of opportunities. Half of his homework had been done in the earlier study period and the rest of the day, being subjects he was best known for, meant that he’d finished all of that work long before they’d even started. In truth, he’d probably managed that for most of them already. He usually had essays written about the subjects the read long before they were issued, after all, and it was a huge part of the reason Farkle Minkus was always so excited to have more homework.

It meant there was something to do.

There not being something seems to be an issue he runs into rather frequently--including today. With N.E.W.T.s on the horizon you’d think he’d have more to do, but he was fully confident he knew everything he needed to and classwork w as just for fun. And it was. That was not necessarily the same situation for his friends, however, which is certainly why since O.W.L.s his ability to find anything to do has sinking to all time lows.

He’d already down post-class rounds, spoken to a few younger years, and-- well-- the last thing to do was go read a book or something. Something. He vouches against that and heads back to the Great Hall where so many students were prone to studying (either that or it was get yelled at for being too loud in the library).

It takes only seconds for him to spot someone he knows even vaguely and he swings his foot over the bench across from them, throwing the bag on the table.

“What’ve you got? Tell me what you’ve got. You need answers, I have ‘em,” he comments gesturing to any books or homework laying out nearby, “so lay it on one, One time offer and then I’m on to the next guy.”

It’s almost like he’s pleading.
