just saw an article criticizing the httyd books for having a ten year old protagonist... said the movies fixed it by... by making hiccup older... and then criticized the fact that toothless was small... and that the movies fixed it by making toothless bigger so hiccup could ride him... as iF THE WINDWALKER ISN'T RIGHT THERE!!! it is very well established in book one that these are hunting dragons not riding dragons. there is a DIFFERENCE. anyway the DISRESPECT saying the movies "fixed the books" shut up

i think the way misha jokes about destiel (for shit and giggles but also to take away tension around the topic) has made people forget he can also be quite serious and earnest about it. he will talk about the social climate on set/in that industry then vs now and he will talk about how there used to be censorship at cons and how he prepared for cas' final scene etc. we just more often see the things he says that push the boundaries or seem really funny cause that's what goes more viral. and i do think he opts for that chaotic approach a bit more in comparison, cause it feels safer to hide behind hyperbole and witty remarks. he's also an entertainer and humor is his go-to way to make himself feel a bit more comfortable in such an extrovert-forward social situation. he's talked about this before more or less, and how he does kinda have a public persona to protect himself (which all of his coworkers do too). he will often genuinely forget stuff but he also pretends to forget sometimes, either to give himself more time to think but mostly to seem more distanced from it than he actually is. misha and jensen both care in similar ways, but they approach it differently and make different choices. and i think both serve a purpose, even if i wish they reversed roles sometimes.

#i think what misha does is more brave than jensen - tho i recognize he is in the slightly safer position to make that choice #well. debatable ig #more true now than it used to be i think #it was always tricky for jensen to be explicitly positive about destiel but he missed his shot to make that easier for himself now #it's also just not just personality to be confrontational about anything ever and that's fine #but disappointing at times in the past for sure where he should've done better #contractually there is also something there i'm sure #which we know is true for misha as well but he just doesn't care as much #lol do my tags even make sense #i appreciate the quiet contributions to the cause (destiel/destiel fandom lol) jensen makes these days #there is however always a “but” for me #cause that feeling of ''man i think you still can do better. there is a way. without betraying your personal brand or whatever''#is still there #and i think it's important to stay critical like that #also of misha ofc but if we're talking specifically re how he handles the topic of destiel i don't have many complaints #not right now at least

Books of 2026: BEING ACE edited by Madeline Dyer.

I remember when the call for submissions went out for this one! Specifically, I remember which trail I was hiking at the time, and how many possibilities I churned (badly) through before realizing: yeah okay I write pretty much exclusively (aro)ace characters, but also I put pretty much None Of That into the story because I'm just...not interested lol. It does not occur to me to pair my flavor of "no, thanks," asexuality with, say, birdnapped lab experiments, or heisting from your foster brother's employer to clear his name, or monster-filled liminal spaces, because we are Busy™, apparently.

But!: I was still hugely excited for this, and finally got around to reading it now that BEING ARO is coming for us. The book itself is very pretty (love the gradient on the boards!), and it's got a general content warning list at the front, which is nice, especially for YA.

The fourteen stories covered a wide range of genres, and lots of those were spec! There was a spread of Explicitness of Aceness, too--some stories talked about it using the word, some stories talked around it, and some stories didn't mention it at all (I was low-key surprised by this lattermost category, tbh, but Pleasantly: that's how I tend to think about my own aceness, too).

The ones that used the words were ultimately heavy on affirmation ("there's nothing wrong with you, you're not broken, you're great the way you are"), which I vibe with in YA especially--we love good reassurance to teen readers which is what I needed lol. The ones that didn't use the words were more focused on a variety of platonic relationships, which I liked, too, in a more subtle way.

Coming off a couple recent anthologies I've read, I was also pleasantly surprised by the overall quality here--almost all of these were well-written (more hits than misses!). My favorites were:

"Give up the Ghost" by Linsey Miler

"Smells like Teen Virgin" by SE Anderson

"The Third Star" by RoAnna Sylver

"No Cure for Doubt" by Jas Brown

Overall, a solid collection, very ace, 10/10 recommend for teen readers in your life (not that adults won't get anything out of it, but we are definitely Not The Target Audience haha).

#side eyes comics #...... might have to force myself to actually sit through them again #comics aren't bad!! I love them! love the illustrations! dreading the idw ones! but I find it so hard to read when there are pictures #I'm a little excited for them but it feels like a #a lot #I just miss Jazz.... awe..
