the rigidness and finality of the whole “straight with one exception” concept is so strange to me. like if a person wants to identify as straight even though they have had a crush on someone of the same sex once, that’s fair and it will always be a person’s own decision. but to say - especially as an outsider about someone else (or a fictional character) - that there’s only one person who will ever be the “exception” to their sexuality, is so weird to me on multiple levels and it reeks of biphobia to me. to think of love and attraction as something so limiting in such an artificial way (and this doesn’t even get into the Gender Is So Fluid of it all), at the very least sounds dull in what might be an attempt to sound romantic

this also goes for "asexual but [person]sexual" when the word demisexual is right there for all your headcanon needs

This is a really good point, and one I hadn't thought to examine in this way. I'm so glad you brought it up because it gave me so much to think about.

As a fictional trope, I think people like it because it seems romantic. I've seen it in fanfiction a lot, but the example that sticks out in my mind is always Torchwood, with Ianto Jones being all “it's not men. it's just him” and that was supposed to be more powerful and romantic somehow than just letting Ianto be a queer man in a relationship

Even outside of queer stories, there's this pervasive idea in romance that love for the right person will transcend your preferences, and that means it is more profound and true. It tries to remove the relationship from its sexual components, or at least from the cultural connotations around sexuality. "We're in love but we're above base things like attraction to the flesh; that's just a byproduct of our pure and profound love."

So definitely biphobic, but also a fair degree of basic homophobia, and sex-negativity in a more general sense, which feeds into those other two. Not to mention the amatonormative assumption that there will be an exception to your preferences if you love them enough.

So it combines sex-negativity with expectations of compulsory sex, which is... some impressive mental gymnastics, to be honest.
