i. isaac @trcvino is the guard assigned to collect the then 18-year-old marcelle king on reveal of her power. when he shows up, he’s not welcome; she thinks he’s just another cop at first, and then becomes outraged, when the comment ‘not a cop’ is taken to mean that he’s actually a reporter. he comes back for the third day and that’s the first time he’s actually allowed past the door, because marcelle has recently been given a hefty dose of sedatives in the aftermath of some surgery or other, and it’s lowered her paranoia and turned her sharp edges into blurred lines. the guard sits and talks about something, and though it’s all a blur that she can barely recall despite having read his report on the matter, she still isn’t sure how she was high enough that the words ‘we believe you can raise the dead’ didn’t get him laughed out of the room or result in her summoning someone to direct the lunatic to a psych consult. she doesn’t know if he’d have been quite so persistent in another situation; she doesn’t know if he tries to ease her into the revelation because that’s how he was trained, or if he took pity on her looking worse than ever before. after all, marcelle king had been in the tabloids all her life - lying in a hospital bed, with a shattered forearm on one side and a cracked tibia on the other, and that’s not even counting the injuries from metal shards and fragmented glass, she cannot look good. isaac gets the fun of convincing marcelle she has a power. after that he goes over her head, pulling the government card to get her transferred to his care. she argues vehemently against this, because her mother is still at death’s door and she’s just been told she’s the only reason her mother now draws breath, because she hasn’t convinced her parents of this new truth of her, because her dad is sitting at her mother’s bedside waiting for medical miracles to work and marcelle doesn’t want him to be alone if it doesn’t work out, or even if it does. obviously marcelle doesn’t win that argument, not well enough, and isaac takes her away from the hospital while she is restricted to a wheelchair and her arm tightly bound. her medical files are transferred with isaac and that’s that; she arrives in grimstone a crippled, beaten mess. the car crash that almost destroyed her family and that has definitely upturned her life was less than a month ago, and marcelle shifts from an expensive private suite to a half-abandoned ward. it’s not a difficult adjustment; neither is the care and the physical therapy she is assigned. no, the hard part is getting used to not having her parents two doors away - she’d always planned to leave home when she was eighteen, but never like this.
