Every year it was the same routine. He’d walked this same path so many times, yet it always felt wrong to him, like one year he’d wake up and this would all go away. But life couldn’t be that kind. And so, every year, this is where he found himself; knelt before his parents’ grave, tidying up as he waited.

He sat there alone for a while, in what would’ve been silence to anyone else. It was always too loud here, though he knew it couldn’t be helped. The dead don’t stop talking when they’re buried. Perhaps if they did, he would’ve noticed the couple in front of him sooner. No mater how many times he visited, he could never stop himself from crying when he faced his parents.

Following what had become their tradition, his mother took his hand, leading him to a tree not far from the grave. Sheltered there from the prying eyes of anyone who may come nearby, Shuichi broke down in his parents’ arms.

Shuichi stared at the calendar bestie his bed; today’s date was circled in red. He glanced at the time. 4:03. If he left now, he’d get there just after the sun rose. He put on a black turtleneck, carefully adjusting it to cover his scars.

He slowly went to the door, conflicted about the day ahead of him. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go, yet… he couldn’t help but dread it. They say time heals all wounds, yet seventeen years later, it still hurt the same as the day it happened. Pushing his feelings aside for now, he walked out the door.

“I-I was about t-to go home, b-but yeah, i-it is.”

“Don’t look so sad, dear. You know you can visit anytime.”

No matter how many years passed, Shuichi didn’t think he’d ever get used to this. He was no stranger to graveyards, the silence bringing dozens of voices to life, but this one would always feel wrong. Following a familiar yet foreign path, he reached his destination.

He sat before the graves he visited yearly, carefully cleaning them up. Usually his uncle would beat him to it, but this year Shuichi was early. He needed the comfort of familiar faces. The boy relished the near quiet for a moment longer before tenderly calling out to those on the headstone in front of him. “Mom..? Dad..?”

“Be safe. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.”

“It’ll b-be okay... don’t w-worry.”

“If you say so... it was nice to see you again.”

“Yeah... I-I’ll miss you...”

The ghost pulled him into a quick, tight hug. “I’ll miss you too.”

“It’s getting late, dear. You should head home.”

“N-not yet...”

A sigh. “Soon?”

“Yeah... s-soon...”
