Open to Akechis

Ren hung his head solemnly. He couldn’t bear to face Akechi. Not because of what the detective had done, but because of what the leader of the Phantom Thieves failed to do. He didn’t have the right to meet his eyes.

“I’m sorry...I’m so sorry...” He muttered, eyes and head still facing the floor. “I should’ve been able to help you. To give you somewhere you belonged. I should’ve saved you. But instead, you saved me. Saved us. As soon as I got out, I tried to find you. To thank you, to make amends. I didn’t get the chance.”

Ren’s voice cracked a bit as he continued to speak. “What you went through...it was bullshit. But it wasn’t because of pity that we tried to reach out to you. It was because of empathy. Compassion. We didn’t agree with your methods, and you had hurt us, but we were willing to give you another chance. A chance you never got. For the longest time, I’ve been thinking, wondering what would life have been like if you came with us.”

His voice remained soft, but it was clear that Ren’s facade was beginning to crack, that he was losing his composure. “If that had happened, would we have become rivals like you thought? Maybe even friends? We’ll never really know. But what I do know is that is what should’ve happened.”
