The words Fang mumbled were so low and so jumbled as he paced that his siblings had to wonder. No, not even pacing at this point.
Mu was leaned against the wall and Ling was sitting on a bench by it, but they both watched, bemused as their brother did so. Mu spoke first, uncrossing his arms to grab Fang’s shoulder.
“Fang, I understand you are excited and indeed, it is a very exciting time for all of us but…” he laughed. “You must at least attempt some form of relaxation. Once the child is here, I can almost guarantee you will not be sleeping so peacefully–whether or not you choose to do so of your own accord.”
Fang looked up at him, not even a trace of a smile on his face. In fact, he looked older suddenly, as if he just stepped off a battlefield.
At that, his brother and sister laughed out loud. “Oh my goodness Fang!” Ling slapped her thigh, struggling to keep her composure. “I’m beginning to believe you might need the doctor more than Mei does!”
Fang attempted to give them something of a smile at their teasing. He knew they were right–after all, Mu and Wenji had already had two boys of their own, and Ling had Hai to look after.
But it was still his first child, and that was an accomplishment in itself. What kind of a father would he be? What kind of interests would the child have? His heart practically tied itself in knots thinking of the child. Would the kid take more after their mother, or their father? Maybe even their aunt or uncle?
Would– “Master Jia Fang?” They all raised their heads at the soft voice. The midwife gave him a warm smile, her eyes watery. She beamed. “The baby’s here!”
All at once, the siblings stood at attention.
“It’s a girl!” She had barely finished the sentence before Fang brushed past her. Mu and Ling followed afterwards, touching her shoulder and nodding their thanks.
Tradition has it that males are desired, but he didn’t care. It was still their child, boy or girl.
Mei looked so exhausted, drained of color, but at the same time, she looked all the more beautiful. “You did great,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to her temple as he sat aside her. His heart warmed instantly as he turned his eyes to the little bundle in her arms.
The tiny figure shifted and his heart both filled and melted. The knots in his heart subsided.
On his lips were the words that would start it all. “What do we name her?”
That was what started this off. One of his subordinates pointed out this slender little figure on the grassy plain, so he went to go check it out.
The closer he got, the more confused he got. What was this guy wearing? He stopped short. Better yet, why did he look so familiar? Bright orange hair styled in the way his hair fell when he left it untied. He only caught a glimpse of the man's face, as he was facing away, looking off to the side.
And then it hit him. No wonder why he looked so familiar. Wasn't that his face?

Some time after Fang was declared missing, Meixiu and Pi went through his papers and found this near the last entry.
To Meixiu and Pi.
I guess if you're reading this, I'm probably not around to stop you from going through my stuff.
I know as a dad, I'm definitely not the best. I'm definitely not on the level of your grandpa, but well, that might be a good thing...sorry dad. Most people say I don't follow him in his looks, or his personality, but I did lose my wife, too. And you lost your mother.
She would cry if she saw how much you two grew in her absence.
Meixiu, you look and act a lot like her. Pi, I'm sorry you didn't get to know her as long. I know you never say anything about regretting being born, and I don't either. And i know you don't say anything about it. You're not me, but you're my kid, too. I'm not angry, but I'm angry that she didn't get to watch you two grow up. That you didn't get to get pulled around by Xiao Mei.
I probably didn't act enough around you two growing up. I probably wasn't as available as I would've liked to be. I see that now. It's a bit too late, isn't it? All the missed pats on the back that you lost because I was still too depressed to pay attention to anything.
So what I'm trying to say is...I was never disappointed in you.
Fang is referring to Pi in the last line. He knows Pi feels some guilt about being born by killing his mother in childbirth. He didn't blame him, but Pi didn't tell him or tell others either.
The little star that strayed away once stood beside this earthen soul.
We walked underneath an umbrella of stars, the beings called you and I.
And when the night left, so did we, but we never walked too far.
But the difference here is you are a star, and I am a being of earth.
And when the dawn came, you left my side and went on your adventure.
But when the night came, you were no where to be seen, so alone I watched the stars.
If you came back again, who knows, maybe I’ll be waiting.
I am a being of earth after all, and tends to like to stand still. I won’t pretend that I wouldn’t walk after it…So some day we’ll see, if we’ll cross paths again. And watch the stars together again.
