Other types of seafolk recognized by the Astarva sirens.
There are several more species and groups of seafolk, however these are the most common ones on Linti that aren't Astarva. Most are visited or wash up on shore.
Mermaids vs. Sirens:
Mermaids are more friendly and look more like humans with tails, whereas sirens are more secretive and tend to have more variation with their aquatic features.
The difference can be described as toads and frogs. Both have different types of species within their labels, but they are vastly comparable and can be mistaken for each other.
Sea serpents and other regional names are also accepted for certain areas, such as sylkies, nixies, nymphs, harpies, and more.
Sirens
Kinkirira
A specific type of siren with full tails and scales on their shoulders. They have small fins on their wrists and scale colors ranging from light iridescent blue to deep chrome blue, almost black. They live mostly in oceans, usually in places with more shipwrecks. They're used to moderate to warm waters.
Vuma
Deep sea sirens; little is known about them, besides the fact that from tail to head they're 6 and a half feet long.
Vatra
“Exotic” sirens; has lots of variations but are all bright and highly dangerous. They have fangs that secrete venom and to up to 90% of marine life, their (dead) flesh is poisonous.
Astarva
The name of the type of sirens on Linti and other islands in the archipelago. Despite being sirens, they have legs, though they have gills and small fins mostly meant for identification.
Mermaids
Zylili
Friendly mermaids that live mainly in areas with mangroves. They build homes in and below the root systems and can be attributed to water spouts when upset, generally from being sad that sailors don't want to play with them.
Canto
Mermaids with octopus tentacles and ink sacks in their wrists; generally curious and scientific about things.
Calypso
The typical type of mermaids humans know with yellowish orange scales and sometimes scales on their chests. Can also have white, gray, blue, or green scales.

A/n: I might make a post about myself, idk yet? Tbh I miss my family there more and finding stuff that reminds me of them soothes the ache.

Ilessa - my s/o.
We originally met when we were kids—we were less close then, obviously. I found her nearly drowned in a spring and pulled her out to make sure she was somewhat okay before getting help. We met a second time and became closer when I first found out I could control water. My sister asked Kassandra to find someone to protect me, and it just so happened Kass had a younger sister who was a skilled hunter. We started dating sometime after she left a few trinkets that were sentimental to her on my nightstand with a note saying she was departing for Marisara {a far away island in the archipelago.} I told her she couldn't leave while she was about to dive off of a rock on the beach and we kissed a lot afterwards.
Jovi - my older sister.
One of the most well-known people on the island. Being the queen of Linti, why wouldn't anyone not know her? The throne of Linti isn't based on bloodline, instead the current ruler choosing a second in command that will take their position after they resign. A dr wouldn't have a "home" without her, and Linti just so happened to have a place for her. I won't give away too much info since she's {almost} directly taken from my life here, but that's all you need to know <3
Kassandra - her second in command.
My sister chose Kass because they were best friends at the time, and they still are. To me, though, she's Ilessa's older sister. She reminds me of coconuts, and collecting shells from other isles. The second in command's job is to protect the ruler and deal with other problems they don't want to/can't do. She's also the one that taught me how to do a lot of things, including tying lots of knots and finding food in the forest.

⟟ Location: Unknown, speculated to be in the Mediterranean Sea.
Linti is the most well-known island in a small archipelago of 7. The nearest island to Linti, Damonsa, is around 5 knots in length (30,300 ft, 9,235m.) away.
Other islands in the archipelago: Aures, Makara, Keone, Lusca, Marisara.
People & Culture
The language spoken across the 7 islands, Lalonva, is a mix of English, Latin, and Greek brought by sailors and the language previously spoken, Lalon.
The locals have sharp gills, fang-like teeth, webbed fingers, sharp nails, and small fins on different parts of their bodies. Gender is non-existent, with the lines between masculine and feminine blending heavily.
Clothes are typically light and flowy, made from woven fibers of the domesticated sheep owned by the inhabitants or from certain trees and plants.
Pearls and shells are common accessories for obvious reasons. Trinkets and jewelry stolen by washed up sailors are also common, since many of the residents never leave the archipelago.
Sailors who have survived the more vicious nature of the locals often rub off on them, leaving behind remnants of human language, traditions, and beliefs. This is why the names of most of the natives are common in other places.
Religion
Greek, Egyptian, Assyrian, and Sumerian sailors have had the most influence on the people's beliefs throughout history. The most notable differences are the way they are worshipped and the pronunciation of the names. Normally, they are made more androgynous and oceanic.
Geography
The trees on the islands are normally mangroves, palm trees, or cypress trees. Plants that don't grow anywhere else are a part of the main food sources for the people living here. Fruit, vegetables, fish, and nuts are also typically eaten.
Rocky terrain is present on the borders of the island and smaller rock formations off the coast. Many of these rock formations are used as hangout spots, hunting places, lookout towers, and sometimes temples.
Houses & Buildings
Each house has a small pool of water where and has been dug out near it for growing fruits and vegetables that are better in water. There's both aboveground and underwater rooms in most of them, with tile or concrete on the dry parts.
Furniture is made of shell and stone, with padded surfaces made of the same materials as clothes. Somehow, fabric and wood never seems to mold or rot on the archipelago.
The most notable structures are the palace, hospital, and shops lining the townsquare.
The palace is an intricate, marble building with several rooms. It towers over everything else on the island in size. Here, the ruler of the island, their handpicked attendants, servants, and honored guests stay. Political meetings and plans for the villages happen here.
The hospital has medicines and remedies from around the world, along with skillful doctors. Other types of sentient sea creatures and merfolk often seek out the islands for their famous doctors.
The shops lining the townsquare sell anything from clothes and goods to weapons and furniture. Instead of a set currency, the islands use barter systems. The most common trade items are shells, rope, jewelry, seaglass, or pearls.
