Yoongi picks a cheap place two minutes away from the bus stop. It’s a busy, mom-and-pop shop that specializes in soup bowls.
“이모, 돼지국밥 2개요,” Yoongi orders for the two of you without thinking. The words barely leave his mouth before he catches himself. “아… 죄송해요… 습관이라…”
You smile and shake your head, waving off his apology. “아니에요. 돼지국밥 좋아해요.”
“이 집 정말 맛있어요,” Yoongi says, pulling out the chair for you to sit on in an odd, forward show of consideration. Not that Yoongi was ever rude, but he wasn’t the pull-chair-out kind of guy around the office. “맛집 급 이에요.”
“기대할게요.” It’s a little funny how you pass this place practically every day going to and from work, and you’ve never been here. The small restaurant is almost like a piece of furniture in the background of your life, an unmoving fixture that’s forgotten until the need arises.
There are minimal side dishes at this restaurant which is a little inconvenient because it really forces you to talk to Yoongi.
“불편하면 미안해요,” he apologizes yet again, “제 생각이 좀 짧았어요. 근데 이기적인 말 해도될까요?” When you nod, he takes a deep breath and speaks, “전 지금 너무 좋아요. 김주임이랑 단두리 밥먹는거. 너무 좋아요. 날라갈 거같아요. 애도 아닌데 제가 왜이러죠?”
You blink three times, unsure if you’re dreaming. To say this is unlike him would be an understatement. The food arrives and you’re saved from responding immediately to his uncharacteristic statements.
“혼란스러워요,” you finally say after three bites. “대리님 같지 않아서…”
He nods. “이해해요.”
Yoongi doesn’t push for more that night. He walks you to the bus stop and waits with you like a gentleman, but leaves it at that. A creepier man would have probably offered to escort you home, but Yoongi knows how to respect boundaries since this is so far beyond early that nothing has even begun.
He does ask you to text him when you’re home safe, and you agree.
“번호 딸려고 한게 아니에요.”
You cock your head to the side to look at him, narrowing your eyes as if to will the truth out of him. A bubble of self-deprecating laughter comes forth from Yoongi’s throat because he’s caught.
“번호 딸려고만 한게 아니에요,” he corrects himself sheepishly.
“대리님 정말…” you giggle, saving his contact anyway. “선수는 아니네요.”
“저 선수 맞거든요. 번호 딴거 보소!”
You shake your head. “딴게 아니고 제가 그냥 준거에요.”
You bus arrives, and you smile one last time. “저녁 잘먹었습니다,” you thank him, “조심히 들어가세요.”
