         watching him move around the kitchen, she listens to his words as she observes. the ways he expresses himself, speaks of himself reminds her of some of the kids she helps and it makes her heart clench for a moment. a part of her wonders if he thinks she doesn’t believe what he’s told her but...she can tell he’s being honest. what reason would he have to make any of that up? fiddling with her cup, she speaks after a moment realizing what she said may have rubbed him the wrong way.

          ————————   ❝   I hope you know I didn’t mean that in any sort of...rude way. I am genuinely amazed by your ability to persevere. It’s easy to quit. Give in. When everything in you is telling you to sort of....surrender except that one part. That one....   ❞ she looks down knowing where she’s been and how the thought of finally knowing what happened to her child was the only thing that pushed her through many tough days. after a moment, she looks at him and gives a warm smile.  ❝  Would you like something hot to eat? I mean, I know my muffins are great but...I can make you a meal,❞ the look in her eyes shows the humor behind her words but  also the sincerity of the offer.

          rachel glances at klaus, matching eyes meeting for a moment, and her heart breaks. she wants so badly to just tell him exactly why. why she cares so much. why she’s devoted so much of her time, what to him is a stranger’s time, on him and his wellbeing. why time and time she’s returned even when he hasn’t always been at his kindest or his best. how she can love him so completely and unconditionally simply because.....

          but she can’t. what she does for him is just that...for him. she does not get to have the title that belongs to her. she does not get claim that title in anyway even if it’s to explain. she doesn’t. instead, she gives him a soft smile reaching out to gently rub his shoulder.

You....I suppose you remind me of things I’ve lost and maybe, in a selfish way, I’ve clung to you because of it...  ❞ half truths make the best lies, don’t they? she and her sister had figured that out as girls and she hopes it works the same on the other. it was true, after all. he did remind her what she’d lost only...he was what she’d lost.
