Ruby grew up having a good life, a good family. An older sister who she got along with rather well on most days, parents who loved her and almost seemed to do just about anything for her and her sister. She felt nothing but loved and felt lucky to have such a great family, which only intensified when she came out as a lesbian at age thirteen and received nothing but support. She was a lucky girl, a kind girl, a happy girl, and she couldn’t ask for a better life ...
But everything changed three days after her fifteenth birthday. She was walking home from school and a man, by the name of Frank Dean, stopped her, asking if she could help him out with his car. Ruby having been raised with a kind heart, and perhaps a bit too trusting, easily agreed to help him and she followed him to his car ... And that was the last Ruby was seen for six months.
A lot happened in the six months Ruby was kidnapped, terrible things went on in the tiny concrete room she spent all that time locked in. The day she was found, was rescued, was just about the best day of her life. It took a lot to get Ruby to talk about what had happened while she was kidnapped, and even then the only people who really know the truth are her family and her therapist.
The incident left her extremely traumatized, and for the first couple months following the incident, it was hard to get Ruby to do much of anything. She more or less completely shut down, preferring to stay locked in her room and not talk to anyone, or socialize. Though, a miracle came in the form of a tiny Australian Shepherd puppy by the name of Cooper. The pup was a service dog in training. The idea to get Ruby a service dog had been a suggestion by her therapist and the pup still being in training was a good way to give Ruby something else to focus on and a way for Ruby and Cooper to grow together.
Slowly, Ruby started to heal from her trauma, Cooper being a big help, slowly opening herself back up to the world and being the kind and happy girl everyone knew and loved. There’s still moments where it gets bad again sometimes, and the struggle to fully heal from everything is a long one, but she’s slowly getting there one step at a time.
