DA LORE (gonna make it fancy and in depth later xo)
centuries ago, a wealthy agribusinessman named augustus calhoun had everything: wealth, power, luxury. he was a greedy man who sought, above all else, to bolster his legacy. his mortality never quite caught up to him until, in his thirties, he grew deathly ill. only then, petrified of the end, did he realize he was lacking one thing in this life: eternity.
as weak as he was, augustus still traveled the world in search of something everlasting. how he met the devil himself is debated within the family: some say the devil presented as a doctor with a cure. others say he presented as a businessman with a contract and a promise.
regardless, augustus struck a deal with satan: immortality at a cost. forever would he starve for blood, and forever would he damn his family to the same fate. to remain powerful and strong, augustus would require blood and die without it. this was mutually beneficial to satan, who needed sacrifice to steal life force.
while hunting started as a neccessity, it became a sport. sacrifice became pageantry. the devil paid them back generously for their worship with immortality, prosperity, and wealth. the calhoun family dodged just about every ounce of misfortune that plagued the world around them: famine, poverty, disease, even warfare.
because augustus sought out children, he married a human. thus, all calhouns that have come after have been dhampirs (half human, half vampire). like vampires, they possess bloodlust that's heightened by the devil's contract. they age, but at a far slower rate than humans, and when they reach a certain age, they stop aging altogether. they can walk in the sunlight and possess a vampire's enhanced strength, speed, and agility.
yes, the calhouns are satanists. the kind that chant in robes and perform sacrificial ceremonies, namely with those they hunt. while augustus considered the devil a benefactor and friend, the family's viewpoint has since morphed into one where they consider satan a higher power. they're very devout and very ritualistic and they see humans (and other supernatural species, but especially humans) as less than. they're pawns to the family, neccessary for continued prosperity.
these days, the calhoun family is something of an empire. they own many companies and influence much of the world's happenings. they're filthy rich. old money incarnate. at the head of their family is beau's father, beau calhoun the third. he is, however, old as hell and beau is chomping at the bits waiting for him to hand the reigns over, though it's more likely that his elder twin sister will inherit it all, much to his chagrin.
