Kaito’s sword, Raijin-no-Ichigeki or Strike of the Thunder God, was handed down to him by his father before he succumbed to his injuries from a vicious Yokai attack. His father lived a noble life, coming to the aid of both Yokai and humans by settling disputes between the two worlds. He taught Kaito to respect Yokai because even though they were dangerous, they could become powerful allies. However, Kaito’s opinion on spirits and Yokai drastically changed after his father’s death.

Raijin-no-Ichigeki vibrates glows shades of pale blues and purples when a Yokai or spirit is nearby. The intensity of these colors and vibrations varies with the power level of said creatures. In addition, the sword can only harm Yokai and spirits. If a human or pure hearted creature is slashed with the sword, it will simply phase through them without causing any harm to them.

Before Kaito’s father’s passing, he spoke of a valiant spirit that dwelled inside the sword that spoke to him once in a dire situation, and again the day he passed. He said that the spirit seized control of his body to prevent him from dying. Kaito has never heard this spirit’s voice, nor does he believe it even exists. 

The sword was named for the supposed spirit that lives inside it and the crackling sound it sometimes makes when a strong Yokai is near.
