5 cm dir. Rizal Mantovani, Indonesia, 2012.
I believe this is the one I refer to as Big Mel (for melanoid, naturally). Only one other melanoid is bigger, and it doesn’t have a name so it’s paired with a nameless large wild type in a gallon food grade plastic bucket.
I haven’t been able to find a gold standard for when the babies are officially considered juveniles, but Big Mel is all moody and likes to remind me that I’m not its real dad and I never will be. Rude.
But I also gather that once the hind limbs are about their max proportional size, they are juveniles.
Buuuuuut I also read something that stated rather matter of fact-ly that pigmentation is fully cooked and set in by the time hind legs even appear. So it’s best to take everything with a healthy dose of salt.
The whole lot has been combined into bigger buckets based on similar sizes. Except the named ones remain alone so I don’t get them mixed up!
I only have 26 that I’m caring for, and it is SO much work. I’m ready for the majority to swim the coop!
