Peter/Gamora, "alphabetical"
i have no excuse for this other than the fact that i missed them. baby merediths origins can be found in this verse
That's all she needs to know in Peter's estimation, anyway.
"Ejudicationally," says Rocket, with that kind of deep skepticism that always makes Peter bristle.
"Educationally, asshole. And, yeah, what the hell else would she gotta know?"
"Like, letters, maybe? In one of several alphabets?"
"She's got her translator!"
"Jeez, I thought you humies did things for sentimental purposes."
They're sitting in the Benatar's living room. It's half a time cycle after breakfast, and Meredith is six years old, neck deep in playing rainbow starpilot princesses with Sally the doll, and getting her hair brushed out of its unconscionable rat's nest by her father. Who is, in turn, being very confident about his parenting choices thus far.
"Mer," says Peter. "Tell the most annoying creature in the known universe all the very important skills you already have."
Meredith, who is holding Sally upside down and seems to be brushing her shoes, looks up and contemplates this question seriously. Her contemplative face is a near exact replica of her mother's, which is perhaps why Peter's own face melts into an undeniably dopey grin.
"How to time jumps!" she says excitedly; she learned that last week.
"And?"
"I can count up to two hundred credits, Uncle Rocket."
"And?" Peter is sounding very smug by this point.
"'M good at fixin' things. And knives. Aaaand I know ... howta tell if someone's scammin' me. 'N Uncle Drax showed me how to make soup."
"The only decent soup recipe he knows," Peter adds, happily, with emphasis.
Rocket sighs deeply, pinches the bridge of his snout between two claws, and glares. Meredith starts humming.
"Isn't she so cute," Peter half whispers, gleeful, above Meredith's head, in a tone filled equal parts with awe and giddiness and pride.
"Okay," groans Rocket, accepting. "Okay! These are all, clearly, excellent skills --" Peter says hah and snaps a colourful scrunchy around the first bundle of purple curls -- "I'm just sayin' maybe we should be thinkin' about a more well-rounded schooling gig."
"A," says Meredith in a sing-song voice, already back deep into her game, as though she is talking to herself, "F L Q P Z. I know letters. Sally knows letters too."
"In alphabetical order," mutters Rocket, sounding aggrieved.
Peter parts her loose curls in the middle with his fingers and begins pulling half of it into a pigtail. "You don't need to know letters alphabetically to read," he says.
He does not say, I barely went to school and I turned out fine; he has too much experience with Rocket for that kind of elementary error.
The hatch to the cockpit opens and Gamora swans into the room. She's spent the morning looking for jobs, which is why Peter is on hair duty.
"Mama!" cries Meredith. "I was showin' Uncle Rocket my letters."
"They're very good," Gamora agrees, coming over to press a kiss to her forehead. "But we should practice kicking today. And scoping out potential dangers in a room."
"Mmm," Rocket says under his breath, begrudgingly appeased, "that's a good one, yeah."
"Your pigtails are lopsided," Gamora informs Peter.
"Ah, shit," Peter says.
"Ah, shit," Meredith agrees, happily, with full attention back upon her doll.
Her mother grins, kisses her again, and then kisses Peter. Rocket groans.
"You're all disgusting," he says. "I go blind, regularly."
There is undeniable fondness in his voice. Meredith begins singing her letters again, starting with X.
