Name headcanon

///ok so I’ve sort of bungled this with Serrana’s “history” and interactions when it comes to Dr. Gero and Dr. Kagasha, but that’s fine. It’s no one’s fault and we can fix it later. 

Here we go: Serrana does have a serial number like the other androids, and was never actually named Serrana. She chose that name for herself

I don’t know what her number would be, as there’s not a whole lot of flexibility in the android numbers…I was considering Android 21-0, 21-S, S-0 or something like that.

I’m fond of S-Zero, aka Zero. The “s” stands for saiyan, while the “Zero” refers her being Gero’s first bio-android as opposed to a cyborg or artificial human. Not only that, she’s his first exploration into creating new life from scratch, out of completely alien DNA no less!

Note: Zero is also a reference to the Golden Dub of Dragon Ball, which renamed Goku as “Zero.” That’s another reason I’m fond of that name. Bit of obscure trivia for you.

So with that in mind, Serrana was originally known as Zero during her early life. Sometime after she met the Z-fighters, particularly Vegeta, she began to consider alternatives. Namely, she became aware of her heritage, and wanted a proper saiyan name. After some brainstorming, she chose a traditional (perhaps upper class) one, naming herself Serrana (with advice from the saiyan prince).

She does remember her designated title of S-0, but refuses to acknowledge it and grows angry when referred to as such. Serrana is more than a number. Very few people would recall her lab number/name.

Headcanons: Age

Serrana was born about 4 months after Vegeta and Nappa came to Earth. From what I can tell, that's actually when Gero began taking gene samples in the first place? Which probably sounds weird, given that Serrana's about 14 when she leaves the lab for good instead of being like...4. But that's why I had to add Dr. Gero experimenting with rapid growth/aging stuff.

I took some inspiration from Bio-Broly, where a clone of Broly grew to adulthood in a few months (I think?). So we know that sort of technology COULD exist in Dragon Ball. It doesn’t seem far fetched to believe that Dr. Gero could have come up with something similar, perhaps even being the creator of such tech.

However, Gero had the sense to grow Serrana at a much slower rate than the previously mentioned Bio-Broly. Dr. Gero wanted time to study the young saiyan, making notes of her growth patterns and abilities between intervals.

Note: Dr. Gero did not attempt to rapidly grow Cell, who was a significantly more complicated organism compared to Serrana, a pure saiyan. Better not to take any chances, giving Cell all the time he would need for his development and conditioning. You can’t rush perfection!

While many androids could see Dr. Gero as a twisted father figure, this is doubly true for Serrana. Consider that unlike most of his other creations, Serrana was born and raised in Gero's care. She wasn't converted from a pre-existing human, and she wasn't built from scratch into a fully-realized form. For better or worse, she is alone in that regard...except for Cell.

It's one thing to hate Dr. Gero for changing you and ruining your life with his experimentation, but what if you literally would not have existed without his intervention? What then?

IDK if I’ve gone into this enough, but Serrana has a LOT of identity issues due to her origins. It’s really easy for her to feel isolated or alienated from others. She knows she’s not the same, can never be the same; Hyper aware of the fact that she doesn’t really fit into any group.

This is why Serrana is so drawn to the rest of the Android fam - It offers her a potential for kinship and sense of belonging that she lacks.

Android

She doesn’t mind being referred to as an android, even though it’s a misnomer, as Serrana is completely organic with no mechanical features whatsoever.  Like she won’t usually correct someone for it. But she will take offense if you call her a robot or anything like that. 

SEMANTICS. WHAT ARE THEY?

Bio-Android 

A significantly more accurate term for Serrana than android, though still a muddled description. The term usually refers to Cell, along with any of his clones or offspring. Unlike them, Serrana isn’t derived from Cell, but is actually a precursor or prototype to his design. So even in this category, she’s the odd man out.

Saiyan

By all accounts, Serrana is a saiyan through and through. She is a full-blooded saiyan and, for the most part, identifies as such. Serrana only falters in this when she’s feeling particularly insecure or unsure of herself. There are times where she sinks into imposter syndrome, feeling that she’s not a true saiyan, or saiyan enough.
