The winter fairy sat on the bank of Havendish Stream, where Winter met the border of Autumn. She dipped her hand into the water and flicked a spray into the air, which fluttered back down in a flurry of snowflakes. The ones that landed on her face and shoulders didn’t melt, standing out like white freckles on her brown skin.
She grinned at the animal-talent sparrow man sitting across the water with a sparkle of challenge in her eyes, as if daring him to show off what he had in return. Though he'd lived so much longer than her, Lumi always felt that he genuinely enjoyed spending time with the newer fairies--even from across the border.
