“ You think that would change my opinion of you? ” She’d been watching the academy leave a bloody trail behind them since they could run. Sometimes other peoples, sometimes each others, and these days? Her hands weren’t exactly clean either. After all, he’d watched the White Violin destroy the world twice, almost a third time, and taken out a field full of Commission agents without a second thought.

It’s honestly a little touching that he still thinks of her with some sort of innocence attached, when her name came with a kill count that towered them all. Combined. “ Do you remember what you said to me? You tried everything to get back to your family. That’s who you are. That’s what matters. ”

Five isn’t sure that she understands the gravity of all that he’s done under the commission. The people he killed without remorse, in full control of himself, just to have a chance to get back to his family. Whether that was selfish or selfless he wasn’t quite sure. But her faith in him is heartwarming, he knows better than to try and argue against it.

“ I’m glad you see it that way . “

In return, he never blamed her for what the White Violin had done. He blames himself, for dismissing her. He blames some of their siblings for roles they had played. But not her, never her.

He considers her for a moment before continuing.

“ I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the real cause of the apocalypse . “ A pause.     “ It wasn’t your fault . “

          That  HURT more  than  it should’ve.  Maybe  because  it  had  a  little  bit  of  truth sprinkled  in  it.  She  knew  it  wasn’t  an  innocent  question,  it  was  a  jab  at  her.  But  she  had  changed  ( or  so  she hoped ) this  time  alone,  and  she  wouldn’t  fall  for  it  this  time.  Five  was  important  to  her,  as  well  as  the  rest  of  the  siblings,  and  she  didn’t  want  to  fight  anymore.  It  was  hard  enough  to  fight  the END  of  the  world.          “  I  don’t  have  a reputation anymore.  So  it  doesn’t  matter,  I’ll  just  save  their  lives  as  I  should. ” that’s  what  I  was  trained  for is  what  got  caught  in  her  tongue.

Five wasn’t completely convinced of the sincerity behind her words. But he had noticed how Allison had changed since the last time he’d seen her. It wasn’t as drastic or apparent as when he had first appeared to proclaim the end of the world but it showed itself in more subtle ways. In how she spoke, in how she carried herself.

He’d last seen her less than a week ago. But for her, it had clearly been much longer. ( A concept Five was not unfamiliar with. )

“ Good . “ He says. Before, he hadn’t cared about their involvement. He’d convinced himself that it was better to do it all by himself, protect them without them realizing. But now he knows he had been wrong to push them away.

“ I believe you . “ A pause. “ How long has it been ? “

“ Experience . “ Five responds bitterly. Whether he is talking about all the years he spend in solitude during the apocalypse or this is some jab at his siblings’ usefulness in general is uncertain. Most likely a combination of the two.

He points at her as he continues. “ I gave you all a chance . I tried to reach out and include you . Really, all you had to do was show up . And you know what ? You couldn’t even manage that ! “ He throws his hands up as he expresses his frustation. It had all been for nothing. A big waste of time.

With just a simple sigh and a slight shake of his head he adds.        “ I’m done . I’m doing things my way now . Don’t try to stop me . “

“Do you ever get tired of yourself?” Diego mocked in-turn with a sing-song voice as Five insulted him for insisting on the moniker Team Zero to call themselves. “I’m making contributions, here, Gramps. I don’t see you coming up with a better name.” He huffed and looked around at everyone else who were looking at him with that look, that look that said: “Diego’s idea is stupid but I don’t want to hurt his feelings.”

“Okay, fine,” Diego spat. “So, we don’t have a name.” A pause for thought. “But Luther and I are co-leaders this time. That’s how it works.” he ended with a pointed look at Five.

Sometimes, Five really wonders how he manages to remain sane around his siblings. If even some of them had their priorities where they should be this entire thing would be so much easier. Yet Diego would rather think of stupid team names and argue about who’s leading who.

He crosses his arms. “ So you are going to get us a way out of this timeline , Diego? Through you two’s flawless leadership ? “ He mocks sarcastically. “ As entertaining as that would be to watch , I’d rather not die because you want to go out playing hero . “

“ Don’t you see it doesn’t matter ? We’re not the Umbrella Academy anymore, idiot . Grow up . “

“ Of course . “  If Five had learned anything about timelines and consequences of one’s actions, it was that everything anyone did had some impact. However small. Sometimes all something needs to fall off a cliff is a little push. “ Maybe not everything , but every change ripples , in little ways or in big ones . “

Calculating probability was a tricky thing, even for him. There was always so much to keep in mind. So many unknown variables that could change everything.

“ Is there a particular event you’re thinking about ? ”

“Oh no, I didn’t mean it like,” She paused, trying to search her memory and coming up with nothing but fog. Looking at him, even as young as he was he was still an inch taller than her. And while he did seem to have a flair for outbursts, Five held the maturity of someone far beyond his years. He walked into a room and people took notice. Even if it was just looking up from their paper to stare at him for a moment. When he walked, each step had a purpose and it was like the whole world knew it too. Something told her that in this life, and in the one she couldn’t recall, never once had she felt like that.

So it hadn’t been an insult when she told corrected the waitress that he was not her son but in fact her kid brother. “I just meant, well...”

“You are the youngest of us, right?”

Five hadn’t been sure what to think of Vanya’s amnesia at first. Just another unknown added to the growing mountain of unknowns that was already there. A side effect to the time travel? Or simply an unfortunate fall? In the end, it did not matter. Despite it all, she had still proven to be the easiest one to talk about this all to. If her casual response to his nonchalant recollecting of the past week’s events had been anything to go off on. He looks at her for a moment. He can’t blame her for coming to the conclusion. As much as he detests his current predicament he realizes that despite how he carries himself, he does still look like a thirteen year old boy. That doesn’t mean he won’t still be annoyed at being perceived as such. “ No, I’m not. ” Five responds bluntly. Taking a long sip from his coffee before continuing. “ Time travel is unpredictable at best, an absolute bitch at worst. We were all born on the same day. But I spend 45 years in the future. “

     “ I’m 58. ”

 “oh my god – you’re not listening.” then again, most of his siblings didn’t, figuring it’s just some other bullshit klaus had thought up. which … wasn’t that far from the truth.

 “i’m trying to be deep here, five. sheesh, would it kill you to relax from time to time?”

“ Considering the circumstances, yes actually. Yes it would. Me and    everyone else on this planet. Including you, dumbass. “

Why does he have to keep explaining this? He wonders if he’s just wasting his time. If the rest of his family is just too naive, too young to understand the real gravity of the situation.
