     her heart pounded against her chest as she sprinted through the woods. the abomination of nature they’d been chasing had managed to split her hunting party in two, and she was desperate to find axel and regroup. she turned, reaction time too slow except to see the flash of a white fangs inches from her face. 

there is no time to breathe, to even raise a hand in defense before it is too late and she is screaming, screaming as she struggles to fight the wolf off, and everything is red, red, red, and the realization of death --

awakening with a start, alyssa struggled to catch her breath, to gain any semblance of a grasp on her bearings. “ axel ? ” she asked in disbelief at first, debating whether she were in another --less nightmarish-- dream, before the events of the night flooded back in. oh, god, had he heard her ? “ i -- i didn’t mean to wake you up... ”
