GUNPOWDER DUSTED fingers worked quickly to unlock the mechanisms & pry the gun open. he was familiar with the movements now, easily dropping into the flow of dropping the barrel down & wiping the empty chambers clean. it wasn’t magical, not yet, but he hoped to see some proper integration soon. the future was one what was both mechanical & magical why limit oneself to only one side of the dimension ? he was a hungry soul that sought knowledge in all forms. ❛ it’s quicker than an arrow & lighter. infinitely more deadlier but exceedingly unreliable at times. ❜

the sun beat down on her pale hair , making her feel uncomfortably warm in the black suit she'd donned that morning. small patches of sunlight peeked past rooftops and reflected off puddles on the ground , causing elena to blink more often. she absentmindedly thought about rude , and how he always wore his sunglasses - perhaps she should get her own pair ?? maybe they could all match.
fighting down a snort , she forced down the urge to shift her weight from one foot to the other. standing still for long amounts of time was still something she didn't particularly enjoy , but turks didn't fidget. shooting a glare back at a passerby who had decided to give her a dirty look , elena hoped that tseng wouldn't be much longer. it wasn't often that the two went out on an assignment together , but she still enjoyed it all the same. she found solace in tseng's company and cherished the sense of camaraderie they shared. he had disappeared into a building , telling her to stay and to guard the front, and so she did. the door to her left swung open and elena turned her head , watching as the dark-haired man emerged from the shadowy room. ‘ did you get what we need ?? ’ she asked quietly , aware that they were garnering attention. ‘ or do you need me to go in there ?? ’

the mirror in her hand was something she had cherished since her childhood. it held countless memories of double-checking her once-long hair before leaving the house and inspecting black eyes from training. it had become a symbol of her past. despite its battered and scratched appearance , the mirror had survived the test of time , its once vibrant yellow color now faded to a pale shade. elena had no idea how it wasn't broken , but , at that point , she was relieved ; she wasn't really interested in getting seven years of bad luck.
she studied her reflection , her brown eyes contrasting with her blonde hair , and couldn't help but purse her lips , narrowing her eyes at the bandage on her right cheek. the slice from her cheekbone to her chin marked the aftermath of her run-in with the remnants. valentine , assuring her it was not deep and unlikely to scar , seemed more concerned about the physical outcome than she did.
snapping it closed and dropping the mirror to her lap , elena lounged back on one of the sofas of healen. the medication she had taken earlier was beginning to wear off , and the dull ache in her muscles was steadily returning. after being poked and prodded at by shinra medics , elena was ready to enjoy a moment of tranquillity.
‘ hey , ’ she opened one eye , canting her head in the redhead's direction. elena had almost forgotten he was in the room with her , what with him being uncharacteristically quiet. she was tempted to be suspicious , but that was behaviour she would've indulged in when she was younger. ‘ do you think i'll look tough with this cut ?? y'know , if it scars ?? ’

pale fingers paused in their typing frenzy as elena exhaled loudly , eyes scanning the screen in front of her. they darted back and forth , double , then triple checking her report. data entry was mind-numbingly boring on the best of days , but that didn't mean that she didn't want it to be incorrect. she had standards , after all. a few clicks later and the document was sent with a whoosh to the appropriate inbox.
reaching her arms above her head , elena linked her fingers and stretched. her back popped in a few places , alluding to the length of time she'd spent hunched over writing. a content sigh left her as she lowered her hands and then propped her chin up with her palm , gaze directed towards one of the many windows in the office.
a bright orange was refecting off the the many buildings surrounding the tower she was in , bathing the room in a myriad of dusky tones. she could almost feel the warmth of the setting sun on her skin. the door creaked open , causing her to look the other way. at the sight of the figure , elena let a small , polite smile arrange its way on her features.
‘ marie , ’ she greeted , rising from her desk. ‘ hi , what brings you here today ?? i'm the only one in at the moment. ’ she kept her tone casual and tried to not be as clipped in front of strangers as she normally was. marie , after all , wasn't a stranger. elena had seen the other woman around often , sending her a polite smile whenever they made eye contact. truth be told , she didn't know how to act around her ; elena was used to working with men , and the only other woman she'd been close-ish with was her sister.

‘ you lost ?? ’
elena's voice cut through the air with a touch of amusement and curiosity. it wasn't often someone new stumbled into the bar she worked at , especially when that someone was dressed so lavishly. the contrast between their opulent attire and the casual ambiance of the bar piqued elena's interest. she couldn't help but wonder if this stranger had been on their way to one of the trendy clubs that had recently sprung up in wall market , stealing away the business that had once flowed steadily into her bar , but she wasn't going to complain. it gave her more time to read her academy books and get started on an essay for next week's materia usage lecture.
slipping a bookmark between the pages , she slid off a barstool she had dragged behind the bar , brushing her skirt down and flicking one of her pigtails over a shoulder. she regretted not changing from her academy uniform , but she'd been in a rush going from martial arts practice to her job , leaving her with little time to change into a more suitable outfit. her academy uniform with sweatpants under would have to do.
nonetheless , she mustered a confident smile , her eyes narrowing slightly as she tried to place the face before her. they seemed strangely familiar , almost as if they had crossed paths before , or she'd seen them somewhere. she wracked her brain , attempting to recall a name or context that would help her make the connection.
‘ if you're not lost , d'ya wanna order ?? ’

a low rumble of thunder reverberated through the walls of healen lodge , causing the glass in the windows to shake very briefly. elena's attention was diverted from the book on medicine she had been studying to take in the disturbance.
despite it being a day off — well , if sitting in the lodge's lounge with her boss could be considered a day off. she found solace in the simple pleasure of reading and educating herself , clad in a pair of soft , grey sweatpants and large shinra military academy hoodie. it was a welcome break from the suit she loved.
glancing over at at rufus , who was still immersed in the white-blue glow of his laptop screen , elena closed her book silently ; not wishing to interrupt whatever state of flow the man had sunk into with something trivial as closing a book. lightning forked its way through the darkness of the sky , illuminating the dreary storm clouds. thick raindrops fell hard and fast , hitting the windows in a rhythmic way , and elena's gaze followed a few from the top of the pane to the sill at the bottom.
placing the book onto the couch beside her , she rose to her feet , tearing her gaze from the windows to rufus. her voice was soft , tentative , as she asked , ‘ sir , may i... uh... permission , that is , to open a window ?? ’
storms held a special place in elena's heart. there was something about the raw power and cleansing nature of them that resonated with her soul. it symbolised a fresh start , a chance to wash away the past and embark on a new journey. in many ways , she saw it as a metaphor for shinra itself — a company that thrived on change , adaptability , and the relentless pursuit of progress.
that and since the remnants she didn't particularly like being enclosed without fresh air for too long ; something she definitely wasn't going to admit to her boss.
