he is not panicking. it's hard to panic when you no longer have a heart thrashing in your chest or lungs that require air to keep you alive. but he's also not not panicking. for all he tries to argue the worst thing that could've happened to him already happened, things like the claws of ghouls and the voice of ethrand seem to elicit a reaction in his mind that has nothing to do with his bodily functions.

" tell me what do you need. " the voice of @davin0s nearby sounds almost worried and occtis fights the urge to laugh hysterically at the thought, lest he gives their location out.

a few meters away another carnage is taken place and all he needs to do to end it is stop shaking. he grits his teeth, closes his eyes and breathes, just to remind himself he's still here. it's not okay, but it's the closest thing he'll get to being okay, given the circumstances.

there is something so... pure in the way doctor ryland grace experiences the world; with wonder, with curiosity. childlike in his pursuit of both knowledge and friendship. how a person like that can remain intact in a dying world, she's none the wiser, but she guesses she could thanks the americans for their relentless optimism. unfortunately, it rubs off, she believes. she used their expression to name her project, after all.

" silly can feel good. " is all @topshelfperverts gives her in reply. childlike in all but appearance, apparently.

she sighs and feels twice her age once more. " i don't doubt that, but i would appreciate you use your time outside of the laboratory to be silly. " she explains, soft but firm, as one would with a toddler, and while carl and lokken seem almost apologetic, ryland still wears a inflated glove above his head like the crest of a rooster.

she wishes she didn't find it funny.

he should be surprised at the sheer speed at which trinkets are extracted and explained in front of him, almost like a form of whiplash. by now, however, he is more than familiar with how her brain works, and he can do nothing but smile softly as she introduces him to each item individually.

she can't look him in the eye. why did she ever thought the world would let her hold on to the only thing that has felt as comfort in the last, what, thirty years of her life? he was only the solution, deep down, she had always known he was the best candidate for the mission, she just refused to see it. this is penance for her overlook.

there is a doctor waiting for her command to come in and sedate him, launch is scheduled by midday. she still hopes he can find it in his heart to be the man she knows he is inside.
