34. How hard is it for them to shake a sense of guilt?

she doesn’t feel that guilty for the beginning of her life, but during and after her time in vietnam it plagues her. she constantly questions her own motives, morality, objectivity, life choices, etc. and feels very guilty about thinking what she could have done to help people. in one way she feels guilty because she chose to go to a war zone when she didn’t have to and was traumatized, and also feels as though she’s not worthy of that trauma because other people who actually had to fight or had their lives destroyed had it worse. she has a weird kind of guilt that’s survivor’s guilt compounded with an inferiority complex relating to her work.

1. What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?

miri: fairly long because she’ll just take a nap

marlene: probably like... a few minutes until she starts tapping her feet or something

3. How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?)

miri: probably reading or maybe listening to soft music

marlene: she sleeps best when she’s tired physically so if she’s feeling restless she’ll do some pushups or situps or something until she’s tired

5. How easy is it to earn their mistrust?

miri: i would say a little easier than average, she’s not a suspicious person but she’s pretty observant and judgmental although she won’t often speak up about it

marlene: extremely easy, she basically distrusts everyone she meets. untrustworthy until proven trustworthy

miri’s full name is miriam, and her nickname as a child was midge, which she absolutely hates. as soon as she got into college she started introducing herself as miri, but her brother still calls her midge sometimes to annoy her.

one of valerie’s favorite ways to relax is taking a bath or swimming. she enjoys being in the water and has her own private pool as soon as she can afford it. she also likes relaxing in the sun, although it’s harder to do that when she has to look after her daughter julia and make sure she doesn’t drown. she definitely buys cute floaties for julia, pool noodles, adorable frilly and bright bathing suits, etc. and valerie herself looks absolutely KILLER in a bikini, no pun intended.
