“Honestly, how I got into porn isn’t that interesting of a story. Truthfully, I just auditioned for NDHQ and here I am. There was a lot of thought and research done before I just jumped on in. I had to make sure that this move was the right one for me, and so far I think it has been.”
How has this career affected your relationships with people? Do you feel judged by friends and family that were close to you before you started in porn?
“It hasn’t really changed my relationship with anyone. I can’t say that my parents are super thrilled with this career choice, but I think they’re more concerned for my safety than anything else. I think I’m probably just one of the lucky ones whose parents respect and accept that my choices are mine to make and my life is mine to live. As for my friends, they are so supportive, I get like five texts a day and at least two phone calls from them just checking in. It’s amazing and I know this level of support isn’t the most common. There are a few people in my life who have had a lot to say against me being in this industry, but the people closest to me, my inner circle, I don’t feel like much has changed other than me being on the other side of the country from them.”
Do you see yourself as an adult entertainer for the long term? If not, what’s next for you?
“I’m only twenty years old, long term for me is like a year. No, but I know what you mean, and no I don’t see myself doing this for more than a couple of years. I’d like to use the medium of video and film to tell a multitude of stories and open people’s eyes to different perspectives. I really love the screen writing, producing and even directing aspect the most. So I would definitely like to spend more time behind the scenes than in them.”
If you weren’t involved in porn, what do you think you’d be doing?
“Definitely school, no question about it! I love school, I love learning, I love finding out new things, I love researching and writing and pushing myself to expand my mind. I am currently looking into schools in the area with screen writing and cinematography programs, so you never know you might see me in a class near you soon.”
What is your most memorable experience, good or bad, working in this industry?
“I haven’t even been in the industry for a month, so every experience I’m having right now is memorable because it’s the first. However, I will say I think I’ve already decided what the absolute best thing about this industry is going to be and that’s the people. Everyone here, is so warm and so welcoming. There is just this inherent level of trust in the foundation of this community that is just so inspiring and motivating. I feel honored to experience it first hand.”
What is the biggest advantage or perk to this career? Biggest disadvantage or drawback?
“There are a ridiculous amount of perks. There’s the living situation, like that’s pretty amazing, I love my space and I love that I am surrounded by other content creators here, I think learning wise and collaboration wise that is the biggest perk. There’s also the obvious, free stuff, I never thought I’d need more than the drawer of my nightstand for my toys, and there’s a whole section of my closet completely dedicated to just costumes and underwear. It’s basically the dream. I think despite all of the love filling this place, the stigma attached to adult entertainment and how it prompts people to look at you and speak to you and judge you, is the biggest drawback.”
What do you think sets you apart from the other creators at NDHQ and in porn in general?
“Oh wow, okay, that’s a question isn’t it? Umm... well I think my look is pretty unique and my filming and editing style. I don’t know, honestly I’ve been labeled as different so consistently in my life that I think it’s informed my style and my personality, the way I carry myself. I think all of that translate onto film. Which is pretty cool to me.”
What’s next for you in terms of content? What can we expect to see from your channel?
“I’m working on a series of videos that have been conceived by me, but will star some of the amazing talent that NDHQ has to offer. I don’t want to say too much about it, it’s still in it’s infancy stages and I don’t want to jinx anything, but I will say that I am so excited to be able to work behind the scenes for a while and to really flex some producer muscles. Also solo work, I think I would like to do a series that shows my sexual exploration of my own body, what does and doesn’t work for me, and hope that it encourages others to do the same.”
Where do your see yourself in 10 years? Are you still with the company? Have you moved onto a new aspect of your life?
“I have no idea where I see myself in ten years. I just can’t even imagine me at 30 years old. That just sounds so far fetched and so far away. I can’t even imagine what I will be doing career wise, but I sure hope whatever it is I’ve found someone or a couple someones along the way. I hope I’m happy, I hope I feel light and free and joyful. If I’m those things then where when and what are as vast and infinite as space.”
If given the opportunity, what would you change about the adult entertainment business?
“I would make every company as respectful and conscientious as NDHQ. I’ve not had any horror stories and that’s because NDHQ has made sure every single one of their content creators is respected and celebrated. Unfortunately, a lot of my co workers do have horror stories and even more people only have horror stories. The idea that anyone might be forced to partake in a scene whether they want to or not because it’s their job, repulses me to my core.”
“Twenty years old is too young for regrets, my dear child. So, try and make the next twenty years of your life regret free.” – Mama Rutherford
That’s what Cam’s mom said a couple of weeks before they left for California. It was strange, because in a lot of way they agreed. Twenty was young and yet when Cam looked back on their life they found many moments that lead them to feel that sinking feeling of regret. It all came from everything they hid, and even now sometimes that heaviness returned. Even though Cam was open and genuine, there was always a part of them that felt like they had to hide. That who they are was going to make everyone uncomfortable, but that had been such a large reason they wanted to peruse NDHQ. It was terrifying, but they just knew not taking the chance, not flying across the country and starting their own life, independent of their parents, staying in their safety net. That would have ended up being their biggest regret, and Cam already knew they just couldn’t live with that. ( 188 words )
“Before you ask any questions about why we’re sitting here like this, I wrote a letter to you both. Just– let me get through it.” – Cam Rutherford
Coming out to their parents was maybe the most terrifying thing they have ever done and something tells Cam, it will remain in the top three most terrifying things for the rest of their life. Nestled between falling in love and dying. They tried practicing a speech, they thought about making a video confession, they even considered just putting it on Facebook and letting them find out. That last one was quickly ruled out because it was all around not a great idea. So instead, they wrote a letter because there were so many things they wanted to say, they wanted the ability to answer some of their questions before they were asked. They wanted it to sound confident and self assured and they just didn’t think they’d be able to keep the shakiness out of their voice. Eventually they decided the best way to deliver the letter, was to sit them down and just hand it to them. Give them both a copy and take their voice right out of it. Then something happened, they sat their parents down and didn’t hand anything to them, because if they couldn’t say their truth with confidence and self assuredness when it was all written out for them, then they might never gain those things in the future and Cam realized they needed to say it. So, after sitting them down, they read from the letter and from that point on their parents knew their truth and nothing made them feel lighter than that. ( 280 words )
“Pick a card any card, but don’t show it to me because this is a magic trick.” -- Cam Rutherford ( age 9 )
At the tender age of five, Cam’s parents took them to a magic show and it was there they found their first passion. Close up magic had been about the coolest thing they’d ever seen and they were determined to master the art. To their parents credit, they supported their young dream and got them a card trick set for their tenth birthday. Cam spent hours and hours practicing tricks and allusions, to the point where they would’t travel anywhere without them and had started going around asking strangers to, ‘pick a card’. While they aren’t quite that dedicated to magic anymore, the love for it is still there and from time to time you might catch them playing with a deck of cards. ( 148 words )
“Hey, kid, where exactly do you expect me to find a pack of blank video tapes? It’s not 1993 anymore and I don’t have a time machine on me.” -- Papa Rutherford ( in the year 2015 )
That’s right, in the year of of Lord, 2015, one Cam Rutherford was looking for genuine VHS tapes to record on. It had been their senior year of High School and half of their classes were film related in some way. For one of their assignments they were asked to create a short that would represent a decade in media. It had been completely random, but Cam and their 90′s loving butt somehow pulled the 90′s from the bowl, and they were going to do it big. Everything filmed on genuine 90′s equipment, and the final project was going to require a VHS player because authenticity was their brand. They recreated a 90′s R&B music video to an original song written by one of their group mates. It was a hit and they got an A. ( 174 words )
“Okay but if you’re buying bath bombs that means you’re still getting in a tub and chillin’ in filthy water. Grown people don’t take baths, Cam” Axl Slade ( BFF )
Apparently, at least within their friend group back home, it was a very unpopular opinion to take baths. Fortunately for Cam, they don’t much care about popular verses unpopular opinions. So, yes, Cam, an actual grown person, still takes baths and they love everything about it. The bath bombs, the bubbles, the ability to line their bathroom with lightly scented candles, the ambiance, the drama of it all. It was relaxing and soothing. It was something nice they could do for themselves at the end of everyday and the only thing Cam valued more than living their truth was self care. For Cam, sinking down into warm water, infused with therapeutic essential oils and topped with suds surrounded by candles was exactly the kind of self care they needed to finish off their day.
