bonus:
i saw you had an analysis on bo and ro???? 👀 👀 👀
I do!! I misread the ask I got about Ro and Cadfael as Ro and Bo (I don’t know how), so I’ve got a completed analysis just ready to go
I’m copying and pasting this word for word from August 11th:
so, these two very strong ogres have been married against their wishes by the current ogre king. Something neither of them want but are both accepting enough of authority to accept it, thinking it foolish.
They also both think they’re going to kill the other one day. Because they both want to be the next ruler and the only way to do that for ogres is by killing everyone who opposes you. Despite their marriage they frequently bicker about who is stronger and who would actually win (I could also talk about how the ogres inability to acknowledge themselves as having flaws makes them weak as soldiers but that’s a different topic)
They’ve both made it very obvious they don’t want to be married, and this marriage is entirely political in nature. Ro hates Bo, and he doesn’t like her either. Yet they both have stations near each other, so they see each other much more than they would like. This gives Shannon opportunities for tension and also a convenient way to keep Keefe and Sophie apart for a while.
It might also feel insulting for Dimitar to have married them, because then one of them will have to concede and not fight for the throne and both of them really want to. It’s a smart move, but not one either of them want to make. It’s like a backhanded compliment. You’re a super good solider, enough so I want to make sure you make it so get married now
I feel Ro and Bo were much more hostile with each other at the beginning, but now they’re settled into their roles and accepted they’ll be seeing each other more than they want to. And that they can’t easily change it because they’re charges are at the center of everything and spend a lot of time together
I can appreciate how their relationship has progressed compared to all the other fixed/consistent relationships. It gives a nice variety and I don’t mind it. The only thing that bothers me is their bickering by insisting they’re practically invincible and unstoppable. But that’s a critique on ogres as a whole, not their specific relationship
Although I will say the idea that arranged marriages are awful and the people hate each other isn’t a great message. I don’t know much about arranges marriages, but from my understanding (please correct me if I’m wrong) they’re not all disastrous and the people don’t always hate being in them. And it can be important to different cultures (I unfortunately don’t know which ones). So there’s probably layers to that I’m not equipped to unpack, but I didn’t want to leave it unmentioned
TL;DR: neither of them are happy with their arrangement, but they’ve adapted to it and seem to tolerate each other enough to do their jobs. They’re biding their time until they can kill each other
