I can’t help myself. In the scene where the captain (KaLeu) introduces his second officer (2WO), the captain looks somewhat happy and proud to me.

“Look at that boy! He’s an idiot, but he’s my idiot. And you can always rely on him.”

[ 2WO is an abbrevation for 2nd Watch Officer. The character’s name is never mentioned throughout the movie/series or the book by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. He is about 25 years old and speaks in a soft Berlin accent. His rank is Oberleutnant zur See, which is comparable to the US Naval Rank Lieutenant Junior Grade. He was played by Martin Semmelrogge. ]

Fiery Redhead: He is as loud and vulgar as his hair is red, and provides much of the lighter elements of the film.

Mr. Exposition: He explains a lot about submarine operations and tactics to Werner.

Plucky Comic Relief: His role is very much that of the fun guy in the crew.

The Prankster: During the party before the start of U-96's Atlantic patrol, he gets drunk, takes a water siphon and sprays the intimate area of Monique (the singer/hooker) with it while she sings on a stage.
