Two hours into the 3.5 hour drive, the atmosphere in Lena’s car had shifted. The rain had finally stopped and awkward silences soon fell into easy conversation. Interests were shared, jokes were traded, and for the first time Lena could see who Max might have been under the ever-present cloud of their grief. Beyond their dry wit, there was passion, revealing itself as they talked about work and how much they loved running a queer bar. They also knew about art and fashion and so many things that the Max Lena meets in the dark is forced to hide. An unfamiliar feeling bloomed in Lena’s chest. She wished things were different. She wondered if Max did too.

(MAX): Hear me out-

(LENA): No! I’m not letting you convince me that the fast and furious movies are fucking ‘high camp’. Hear yourself!

(MAX): You're thinking about them too literally! It’s about family! Fast cars! Jumping a fuck off truck off a cliffside and for some reason not immediately dying!

(LENA): Max, they drove a car into space. Space!

(MAX): Exactly! Peak cinema!

(LENA): You’re dead serious too.

(MAX): It’s called being real. (LENA): [Lena kisses her teeth]

(MAX): I’m outside the station, how far away are you? I think it’s gonna rain 💔[8:04am]

(MAX): Are you close by? Train’s in 15mins! [8:09am]

(MAX): ?? Answer ur phone pls. [8:14am]

(MAX): Aish what the fuck? Are you okay? [8:19am]

(MAX): I texted Ty and he doesn’t know where u are either! What’s going on? [8:23am]

(MAX): I’m not upset. I just wanna know ur okay. there’s another train at 8:42 if that’s easier? [8:25am]

(AISH): H-

(MAX): Where the fuck are you?

(AISH): Shit, *coughing* What time is it?

(MAX): It’s almost 9 you dick. What’s going on?

(AISH): coughing - I’m really sorry Max. I’ve got a really sore throat and a cough. Can the woman do another day?

(MAX): emotional - Fuck sake. You knew how much this meant to me!

(AISH): Max I-

(MAX): I never ask you for shit! And I didn’t ask you for this! You offered! 

(AISH):  I know! …But this isn’t my fault!

(MAX): Bye Aish. [They hang up]

[MAX SCROLLS THROUGH THEIR CONTACTS BEFORE SETTLING ON LENA]

(MAX): [Sighing] Fuck my life.

While it was fairly busy, the pub wasn’t as packed as it could have been, especially for dinner time. Luckily, the staff were friendly and the food was decent. The two ate in silence as a thunderstorm started outside. A truth dawned on Lena. It was probably unsafe to drive -  the exhaustion of the day had begun to set in her bones and the thought of going outside again filled her with dread. An unspoken question hung in the air and before she knew it, the words had tumbled out of her mouth.

(MAX): [jumpy] Fuck, was that thunder?

(LENA): Yeah…should we stay here tonight? Might be a bit rough driving back.

(MAX): …Alright.

(LENA): I’ll go and sort it now. 

(MAX): Let me know how m-

(LENA): Don’t worry about it.

(MAX): wait I-

[Lena gets up and walks off before Max can respond]

(MAX): [Sighing] Of course…should we get the drinks in then?

(LENA): I said it’s fine Max. I don’t do public transport anyway.

(MAX): That’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to me.

(LENA): I don’t think that’s true.

(MAX): …Can I play some music?

(LENA): Connect your phone to my bluetooth. No Charli XCX or any of that computer pop shit.

(MAX): If you hate me then say that.

(LENA): My car, my rules.

(MAX): Ew.

(LENA): If it gets out of hand I know where to find you. Are we good?

(AJ): [Stretching] We’re good. Watch your form.

(LENA): My form’s fine. [Phone rings] Can you see who that is?

(AJ): Max? As in-

(LENA): Shit. Shut up. Give it here. [Answering the call] What’s up?

(SANDRA): Max, come in.

(MAX): Thank you for letting my friend come with me, I’m a bit nervous and-

(SANDRA): Don’t worry about it. Dais mentioned you might not come alone. 

(MAX): Cool. Um-

(SANDRA): D’ya want a cuppa? Me mum’s got all sorts in her cupboard.

(MAX):  Oh! English breakfast would be great if you’ve got it. 

(SANDRA): Alright, [to Lena] Same for you?

(LENA): I’m okay thanks, is it cool if I sit out in the living room? Just to give you two some privacy.

(SANDRA): Go for it. Let me know if you need anything.

(SANDRA): So how do you want to do this? Do you have questions or do you want me to just start talking?

(MAX): Um, I guess I have questions? Like, Daisy said you were cellmates so was that for a long time or?

(SANDRA): I met your mum around seven years ago. Typically, when new inmates are inducted, we’re paired up with someone to show us the ropes. Your mum was that for me. I think when I got there she was a few years into her time.

(MAX): Right…and how was she? Was it…hard for her? I mean I know it’s hard for everyone but she asked me to stop visiting quite early on. She told my stepmum it was too much for her and I never got to- Sorry I’m rambling.

(SANDRA): Don’t apologise. Look, your mum and I rarely got into the deeper stuff. We looked out for each other and we tried to keep each other in good spirits. I do know that she loved you very much. She kept a picture of you by her bed, and I know that when she spoke to your stepmum, she asked after you. I don’t have kids myself, but having family visit you inside can be as painful as it is necessary. Not everyone can hack it.
