It’s so easy to get lost in my head and forget how the whole world has turned upside down with the pandemic. My whole life (or at least my medical life) I’ve never imagined I’d skip residency (even temporarily) for a cureer in academics and research instead. Then the pandemic happens and it turns all my priorities upside down, hails my momentum to a full stop. I have no idea what I’m doing or if it’s the right thing to do.
Everything is so foggy and weirdly reminding me of how Neil Gaiman once described writing a novel. “It’s like driving through the fog with one headlight out,” he said. “You can’t see very far ahead of you, but every now and again, the mists would clear.” I just want the fog to clear for just a moment so I can see where the hell I’m going for once.
The power went out at work yesterday but it was at like 4:50 PM so it didn’t really matter.
I got to work today and they tell me half the building still doesn’t have power, including my floor.
Ok. That’s fine. I have a laptop, I can grab it and work from my mom’s office.
They are not letting people into my floor specifically.
Ok.. can someone bring me my laptop then? Security says sure. 30 MINS LATER… they call the front desk and ask me to describe the laptop because there are two silver ones on 1 desk. One is my office laptop the other is my personal one.
I tell him very specifically, it’s the one with a black pair of headphones plugged in. It also has a black box plugged into it with a very thick cable. Connected to the box is the charger which is plugged into the wall. All I really need is the laptop and the charger. If it’s easier just bring every cable connected to the laptop.
20 MINS OF WAITING…
He brings me the correct laptop. With the headphones. And the mouse. With. The charger. From the other laptop.
Please. Explain the logic behind taking something that was plugged into to other laptop. YOU BROUGHT THE RIGHT LAPTOP..? Why did you take something it wasn’t plugged into. Bro.
I didn’t even notice till I sat down in my mom’s office. Thankfully this laptop is charged with USB C so we were able to find a cable.
But holy shit. How is that possible. He even asked about the box. I said yes the one that has a green and a white cable is also where the charger is plugged in. Proceeds to bring the charger connected to a different laptop.
