What aspect of fandom culture in general or TW fandom in particular bugs you the most?
(spolier warning for teen wolf lolol)
for fandom in general, i personally dislike when actors are shipped together. i feel like it crosses a boundary to sexualize / fictionalize real people rather than characters, and it just icks me.
for teen wolf i have a few things that irk me. for one, i despise the “girlbossification” of disgusting villains. like, i have to block certain tags because i just find edits of kate or jennifer that cast them within this “badass female” light to be gross. that’s just my opinion. i know characters are more complex than their actions blah blah blah but not these ones LMAO. kate literally manipulated and assaulted derek when he was a child and then killed his entire family. then, jennifer revictimized him. i just hate that, personally. i don’t think there is anything that could redeem them and i don’t enjoy seeing that content.
also, i hate the hypermasculinization of derek (and conversely the hyperfeminization of stiles). i find fans who are anti bottom derek / anti top stiles to be funny. because sterek is gay. like literally. that’s just one aspect of the teen wolf fandom that bugs me (and i guess fandom in general). basically, people think derek is super hot and sexy trademark so they write fics where stiles is basically girl-coded as a pseudo self-insert. because the stiles/derek tag will get more traction. it also bugs me because internalized misogyny comes into play (but i will not get into that). i can typically tell when something was written by a queer author (queer feminization / masculinization exists on a different plane). so i just think the placement of derek within this rigid bubble of masculinity is kind of silly because stiles/derek is a gay ship. you can’t heteronormalize a gay relationship. hashtag please let derek bottom 2021 LMAO
