absolutely obsessed with domenico ghirlandaio’s painting “francesco sassetti and his son teodoro.” like, it’s just a standard formal dynastic portrait of him sitting there with his son but it is just so human. the intimacy and love and trust between father and son that’s displayed there solely through facial expressions. like, it looks like they’re exchanging some inside joke, or francesco is telling teodoro some cool science fact or important life advice and his son is looking at him in complete admiration. just..... the fact that we have this unremarkable, nondescript but so intimate, so intensely human, so intensely lifelike snapshot of two people from 1488... blows my mind.
