when she went sent out to retrieve her father's axe, three birds were perched onto it. she told them to fly home where it was warmer and gave them crumbs from her bread. for her kindness, they gifted her with a wreath of flowers onto her head. her stepmother, jealous, sent her own daughter to do the same the next day. the stepsister treated the birds cruelly and they cursed her to say nothing but "dirty creatures" afterwards.
