Another little watercolour, trying out new things each time
it's really cool getting to see some behind-the-scenes tourney stuff. follow-up question!
how did you make your coats of arms?
thanks! All the heraldry so far for Tourney was started off on a cool website called DrawShield. It has a fantastic array of colours, furs (patterns), charges (the items and figures) and more, that use descriptive terms common to European heraldry so you can learn to describe things properly- that's blazonry, baybee!!
Tourney currently isn't licensed or commercial in any way but should I decide to go that route, I'll redraw everything for myself and write the DrawShield team a love letter in the acknowledgments.
I also fondly refer to Stephen Slater's The Complete Book of Heraldry (ISBN-10 1846819601)
Specifically for Tourney it was a lot of fun to throw together heraldic devices for the families and characters because the secret rule of choosing emblems is that the is no set deep meaning to the charges/symbols on them. I chose what was important to the characters, their locations and ranks. Fun heraldry fact of the day is that the Percy family, the dukes of northumberland, have fish featured on their coat of arms because of a marriage that joined them to the Lucy family. Lucy was a nickname for a pike fish. One of the oldest extant Norman families in the UK has a pun on their blazon!
new brushes test!
"Release the hounds" in the tourney amounts to a crowd of muscular, bear-bodied men wearing plate released onto an arena to beat each other with steel sticks, looking all sweaty and-
You are free to stand still and imagine that as Princess Iona releases actual hounds on you
i think you said you were cool with questions about tourney so:
tell us something about tourney that you've really wanted to share but haven't had the chance to. unless you've shared everything you wanted to, in which place which area of the map is your favourite?
Sure thing! Nothing terribly specific and this is an old screenshot (its since expanded) but I started writing all my worldbuilding notes down on a pureref board and its a fun sprawl
