you were pulled out of your work by the aggressive tone of your phone. rather than feeling annoyance at the distraction, your ears perked up, and you felt excitement slowly flooding your system. drowning you in a pool of anticipation and fear..
it was a special ringtone that removed your blinders. a ringtone you had set for a very special person. the song continued - just the two of us, grover washington - when you finally moved to pick up your phone.
you held the delicate item in your hands, the caller id taunting you.
of course, you wanted to talk to her, but you hadn't seen her in nearly four months. there was zero possibility you weren't going to say something stupid
it finally hit you the call would soon go to voicemail, pressing the answer key and held the phone by your ear. "hello?" you answered, truthfully unsure if she butt-dialed you or not.
there was shuffling for a moment before a voice spoke back at you. a voice you didn't recognize. "hi, is this y/n? like y/n l/n?" the voice was nasally and chipper but you could sense a bit of unease on the other side of the line.
"shouldn't you know who you're calling? and isn't there caller id?" you were now loaded with questions. some flowing faster than others.
"dude i don't know, the caller id only says ' baby' with some stupid lovey dovey emoji. " the voice spoke quickly and as if you were in the room with them. you could feel their nerves building. "now is this y/n l/n or not?" they reiterated.
"okay chill, and yeah it is. who are you, and why do you have my girlfriend's phone?" you moved to place the phone soundly on your desk by your laptop and steaming cup of hibiscus tea. the call is now on speaker, so you can focus on your work once more.
a relieved sigh could be heard on the other end of the line followed by more quiet shuffling. the small sounds raised your suspicion. until the person spoke again. "i'm her sister. hi nice to talk to you i'm aliyah, i have a kind of big request." the girl you now knew was your girlfriends younger sister spoke rather quickly.
a soft hum reverberated off the back of your throat as you took a long sip of your tea, aliyah took it as a sign to keep talking. "obviously if you can't, i get it, but... okay, so basically i got jenna for secret santa and your girl is like mega broke so i-"
"do you want me to send you money for her gift?" you cut the young girl off with your assumption. the grumble that came from your speaker indicated she did not appreciate that.
"no, i was wondering if you would be her gift. since, like, you haven't seen each other since 'beetlejuice' wrapped, and you haven't met the family yet, and she won't shut up about how much she misses her stupid girlfriend... no offense."
"none taken, when am i flying out?" your reply came naturally as you were now half zoned into your work again.
there was a moment of silence, which you assumed was silent celebration before you heard aliyah again. "i was not expecting this to work, i'll text you my number off her phone to send you the detail, then delete that text kay? she is like hunting for her phone so... gotta go bye!"
the monotone beeps were heard, indicating aliyah had hung up. you sat at your desk in quiet contemplation of what you just agreed to. soon enough you received a text with a phone number.
as you weaved through the bustling airport crowd, your mind raced with a mix of excitement and nervousness. the agreement to be jenna's surprise christmas gift had been made in a split second, and now the reality of the situation was sinking in.
checking the text message from aliyah, you confirmed the details for your journey. the 23rd seemed like the perfect time to fly out, giving you enough time before christmas to make the surprise memorable.
during the flight, your thoughts alternated between imagining the reunion with jenna and contemplating the box-jumping scenario suggested by aliyah. the image of you popping out of a box on christmas day brought a smile to your face, even if you doubted it would truly startle jenna... and it being mildly uncomfortable.
you approached jenna's hometown, the car speeding past street lights and local pedestrians. a mix of anticipation and curiosity about meeting her family took over. you hadn't met them yet, and being the surprise gift added an extra layer of pressure. what if they didn't like you? what if jenna's reaction wasn't as joyous as aliyah hoped?
upon arrival at jenna's family home you avoided every window in sight. being cautious of jenna possibly looking out a window during your unexpected arrival. your phone appeared in your hand, typing a quick message to aliyah as you stood on the side of the road, trying your best not to look awkward.
a large duffle sat before you on the ground, and a messenger bag slung over your shoulder as you anxiously await a response from aliyah.
"y/n!" the voice was just above a whisper. your head snapped around in all directions in search of the source of the voice. but to no avail, you honestly thought you were hearing things and turned your attention back to your phone. "y/n, turn around you digus!" the voice was there again.
you did as told, turning around to look at the ortega family home. and at the side of the house, you assumed the gate to the backyard was cracked open and a face was staring back at you. you couldn't make out much, given the dark of early morning
"aliyah?" you questioned, gathering your things to move closer to her. the face nodded viciously, her hand ushering you to come closer. you followed, maneuvering past the gate into the backyard of the house, trying to be silent.
finally getting an overview look at aliyah as the sun peeked over the mountains ever so gently. "well, nice to, like, officially meet you," the young ortega murmured as she slipped into the house, you in toe.
"yeah, you too," you replied as you followed her through the house, still refraining from making any noise. aliyah led you to a small guest bedroom at the very end of the hall, opening the door for you when you got there.
you stayed in that guest room 24/7. aliyah bringing you three meals a day, trying her best to be discreet about it. until the day finally came. christmas.
jenna's nieces and nephews were running around the house. wrapping paper scattered around the floor, laughter filling the air. the sweet aroma of cookies and soft melodies of christmas jazz made the environment so much more enjoyable.
aliyah snuck away from the family activities to retrieve you from the room you had been living in the past few days. the two of you walking toward the living room, trying not to be seen by jenna or one of the younger kids. knowing they would blab.
the littles were playing with their new toys, but jenna was seated on the couch conversing with her other sister. the young ortega you were following shot her mother a look begging for help. you watched as she nodded, whispering something in her husband's ear.
"jenna! can you help me over here real quick?" you watched your girlfriend's head whip toward the strong voice, agreeing she left to help her father. natalie rushed over to you and aliyah, skillfully going unnoticed.
"i hope you know this is not the way i intended on introducing myself," you joked, causing jenna's mother to smile. the two helped to hide you as you approached a large box, covered in wrapping paper standing tall by the tree.
climbing into the box, you met eyes with many of jennas family members. this had to be one of the worst ways to introduce yourself.
you settled into the box, you could feel the anticipation building. jenna's family members exchanged puzzled glances, trying to comprehend the unexpected addition to the festive scene.
the lid of the box was gently closed, leaving you in semi-darkness as you crouched inside, waiting for the perfect moment. you could hear the muffled sounds of the family's christmas chatter, the rustling of wrapping paper, and the occasional laughter from the other room.
suddenly, jenna reappeared in the living room, her eyes searching for aliyah. as she turned to walk back towards the couch, the family collectively held their breaths. aliyah, trying to maintain composure, led jenna towards the towering box.
"hey, jenna, there's one more gift here for you," aliyah said, gesturing towards the large wrapped box. jenna's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but she played along with a curious smile.
as jenna approached the box, her eyes widened with curiosity. the moment had come, and you could feel the tension build. aliyah counted down silently with her fingers, and on cue, you burst out of the box, arms wide open.
"surprise!" you exclaimed, a mix of excitement and relief washing over you. jenna's reaction was a priceless blend of shock and delight. her eyes widened, and then a burst of laughter escaped her as she rushed forward, enveloping you in a tight hug.
the room erupted into cheers and applause from jenna's family, who had been eagerly awaiting her reaction. aliyah stood there, wearing a triumphant grin, proud of her successful plan.
as jenna pulled away from the hug, she looked at you with tear-filled eyes and a beaming smile. "i can't believe you're here, how did you…?" she began, still processing the unexpected reunion.
you chuckled, "your sister's idea. secret santa got a little creative this year."
jenna's initial shock and joy at your surprise presence evolved into a constant state of elation throughout the christmas festivities. the two of you became inseparable, catching up on the months spent apart and creating new memories with her family.
as the day unfolded, jenna introduced you to each member of her family, proudly proclaiming, "this is y/n, my girlfriend," the warmth and acceptance from her relatives put any lingering nerves at ease. jenna's nieces and nephews, initially curious about the mysterious box and the unexpected guest inside, quickly embraced you as a playmate in their holiday games.
the living room buzzed with laughter, joy, and the clinking of glasses as the family gathered for a festive meal. jenna's mother insisted on seating you next to jenna, and as you shared stories and jokes with the family, it felt like you had been a part of their holiday traditions for years.
throughout the day, jenna kept stealing glances at you, her eyes reflecting sheer happiness. she'd squeeze your hand under the dinner table, sneak a kiss in the midst of the holiday chaos, and exchange knowing smiles that spoke volumes about the special connection you shared.
the evening continued with a round of christmas carols, where jenna's family showcased their singing talents. jenna, ever the enthusiast, pulled you into the impromptu choir, and together you belted out holiday classics. the shared laughter and music filled the room with a contagious joy that made the christmas celebration unforgettable.
