I wanna do inpatient again but I'm 18 now so I'd be put in the adult Ward and idk how different it is and there probably won't be people my age but I'm getting really bad again and idk what to do -lil
Hi love,
I’m sorry to hear that things are getting bad again. What’s going on, if you don’t mind me asking? If you want to talk about it, I’m here to listen! Sometimes it can help to talk about things and get them off your chest.
Most likely you would be put in the adult ward, yes. I’ve never been in a pediatric ward, but I’ve been in an adult ward, so maybe I can offer some insight.
I was on a locked unit, meaning I couldn’t leave. I also couldn’t have my cell phone or computer or anything. I was in a room with another person, like a typical hospital room. My friends and family were allowed to come and visit and call me whenever. They brought some of my belongings, but I wasn’t allowed to have certain things that were deemed potentially dangerous (shoelaces, anything with strings, shaving stuff, etc). My friends brought my some books, clothes, etc. Most of the day I could do whatever I wanted, like read or watch Tv. There was a game room with board games and a WIi and stuff as well. The mornings were spent in group therapy, talking about feelings and coping mechanisms and stuff. The other people in there with me varied greatly in age and ethnicity. I remember there were a few people my age that I befriended and hung out with, a few older women and men, and even a pregnant women. Each day I’d also meet my psychiatrist and talk to him about things and I’d get medication each morning as well.
How does this compare to what your inpatient experience was like? Does it sound similar?
If you’re interested in going to a hospital, it’s important to know that the hospital is a temporary solution to help keep you safe from yourself. It’s not a long-term thing. It’s meant to keep you safe until you’re not an immediate threat to yourself or until you’re stable enough to take care of yourself. Usually this is about a few days to a week or so (but keep in mind it could be longer and you don’t control that!). A much more better long-term alternative is outpatient therapy. Do you see a psychiatrist and/or therapist right now? If not, I would really recommend you look into that first instead of going to the hospital!
Therapy can really help with what you’re going through, and it won’t interfere with your everyday life. You can still live your life as you normally do, but you will just have to set aside a few hours a week for therapy. And a psychiatrist can prescribe you medication, which can really help as well. Basically you can get the same kind of care with a therapist / psychiatrist that you could get in the hospital, but you won’t have to be confined to the hospital 24/7, and it will be on your own terms.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t go to the hospital or try a more extensive program. I just think you should start with therapy / a psychiatrist first, and if that doesn’t help, then try the hospital.
(Keep in mind all of this only applies to the USA. Other countries function a lot differently. For example, there’s a lot more long-term programs in other countries than in the USA).
Hope this helps! Please keep me updated
