The bitter winter air hugged Sutton’s body like a blanket, sparking a deep shiver to tremble in her bones as she walked down the pavement. It would have been high time for her to buy a new jacket that actually insulated her body heat, but every passing month she had been drowning her extra money carelessly. She stopped momentarily, sparing a glance at her secondhand watch and figured that she could afford some time to grab a cup of coffee to-go. The warm air inside the shop greeted her kindly, sparking a small smile to settle on her face until the casher that had received her order charged her more than she actually carried in her pocket. “I’m down 50 cents, honestly. That’s not even a whole lot-” She tried to plead, but the person behind the counter didn’t spare her a kind glance. With a defeated sigh, Sutton moved to leave until the person behind her stopped her. “Sorry to hold up the lane,” She mumbled sarcastically. “Some jackasses can’t spare a few cents.”
