After Miya was shoved aside, every lonely and guilty feeling tugs at him. He just wanted to visit Shadow but, of course, Joe happens to get in the way.

“ Well...I overheard some kids in my class talking about this theme park a few towns over. Apparently, there’s a discount for tickets going on right now. You can get a discount if you go with a group of five or more.. And since we’re a group of five or more... I thought, maybe.. You know.. “
i've got these habits that i cannot break | 14.5k words | T
miya puts on his most pitiful face and tucks himself into joe’s side. “my dads are getting divorced,” he says, trying to sound like the very subject of conversation puts him close to tears. he feels joe’s chest constrict, like he’s trying to hold in a reaction, and miya digs one of his nails into his friend's side. if joe laughs now, not only will miya commit homicide, but the victim will be one specific head chef.
joe’s chest relaxes and he says, in the same sad tone as miya, “he was cheating on me with the head chef at his restaurant."

The guy scowls. “It’s not enough for you to shine in public? You have to shine here, too?”
“Hey, if Miya wants to skate here, that’s his choice,” Reki interrupts, thrusting an arm in front of Miya as though to shield him. Miya blinks, stunned. He didn’t even notice Reki had shifted to stand in front of him.
“I’m just saying,” the guy continues, his face starting to turn red—in embarrassment or anger, he’s not sure—"it’s weird. What would happen if it got out that national team hopeful Chinen Miya was participating in an underground skating ring?”
Gasps ring out around them as Miya’s blood turns to ice.
“Is that a threat?” he hears himself say, but he doesn’t feel entirely in control of his body.

He's been left behind.
The realization hurts, settles deep in Reki's chest and just aches. What makes it worse is that he's sure that Langa doesn't even know what's happening. Reki had screamed at him in the pouring rain and all the other boy had done was stare back at him with that wounded expression. Langa hadn't meant to leave him behind. Langa had thought they were right beside each other the whole time. It isn't his fault what everyone else says.
