Kat Saul.
Nashville's resident pop darling Kat Saul has revealed her anticipated debut EP, ...from Unit 408, out now. Named after Kat’s apartment unit number, the EP title reflects the intimate nature of the project.
The five-track EP is a delightfully unapologetic pop project, fusing left-of-center pop beats, Nashville-flavored lyrical sensibility, and alt-pop melodies reminiscent of Charli XCX, Lorde, and Gwen Stefani.
We had a quick chat with Kat about ...from Unit 408, her songwriting process and more. Read the Q&A below.
Hi Kat! How would you describe your sound?
"Alternative pop with pop-rock influences."
You’ve just released your new EP ...from Unit 408. What was the inspiration behind the record?
"All of the songs on the record are about people, situations or topics that have kept me up at night pacing around my apartment. Unit 408 is not only the title track, but the genesis for the songs."
What was your songwriting process?
"I typically start with whatever’s on my heart. I have a running note on my phone that I call my “hook book” filled with concepts and sayings I find compelling. If I’m not feeling particularly called to something going on in my life, I’ll pull from the hook book. Everything else is secondary. If the heart and lyrics aren’t there, the production won’t save the song."
What kind of things have you learned during the process of making your first EP?
"I learned a lot about myself and how to be more honest in my music. Through collaborating with my co-writers and producers, I also gained some amazing friendships and partnerships that I know will continue to push me going forward."
Finally, what's next for Kat Saul?
"You can definitely expect some more music soon!"
