"can i kiss you?" omar to phoenix before they started dating, said one night at like 3am in the bar after everyone else has gone home, including their significant others.
@backupstepdown
she isn’t sure what they’re talking about until she hears him say the word monet again-- and then she’s right back on track-- giving her opinion in soft drunken phrasing. he’s close-- his arm around her shoulder as they discuss the importance of interpretation in art-- the blurry--the sharp-- it’s all significant. somewhere between emphatic points and the warmth of his arm they get a little closer. she doesn’t really notice it until he asks--
“can i kiss you?”
her eyebrows shoot up-- there’s no one here- no boyfriend-- no girlfriend, just them and the smell of spilled beer. she meets his gaze with a question in her eyes-- he’s close and he smells so good-- and she doesn’t want to think about it. she nods imperceptibly, nudging his nose with her own.
“only if you do it properly.”
the next day she pretends she’s too drunk to remember-- and he never brings it up because maybe he was. it’s a hazy--dreamlike thing and if she squints she can pretend it never happened--pretend they never smudged the lines between them, because it’s better that way.
reinterpret it.
like monet.
